Martinez's antics from min 1 summed Villa up

They came for the point

Moyes lack of tactical awareness was frightening to see

Some of our fans were expecting a win on Saturday.
Don't shoot the messenger but on current form, bar Arsenal, Villa are the best away side in premier league.

2 seasons ago we were one of the most productive teams from corners, free kicks, and it was Soucek and Dawson who was getting on the end of them, now we’ve no Dawson and Soucek isn’t making the effort. Afraid to say though that those tactics were pure Moyes, lay for corners etc and lump it into the middle hoping to get a head onto it, no wonder Paqueta, Scamacca etc are bewildered by Moyes instructions.

Has anyone mentioned yet that Villa were utter gash?

Same thing we used to berate the likes of Stoke and Bolton for doing. Only difference is they were actually organised and hard to break down at the back, and were intimidating to play against. I reckon we are most teams’ dream.

I never had a clue about his stats yesterday but did mention the ditherer's out thread that he was anonymous for the entire match. to find out he'd only completed nine passes wasn't a shock as our entire tactic seemed to be to bypass the midfield with either a long ball wide diagonally or through the middle. medieval football

Quite simply- goals. He chipped in with a good amount about 18 months ago so despite aspects of his game which maybe aren't so good, you could rely on him to if not score, get into a great position in the box a few times a game and get on the end of a chance or a cross.

He's clearly been told not to do that any more as you never see him up in the box. Therefore the one facet of his game which was hugely beneficial for us and made his inclusion a plus has been taken away and he's no longer worth it.

As for why Moyes keeps persisting? No idea. maybe he thinks he can somehow magic it into the goal from the halfway line or wherever he's told to stay or not progress beyond. Like with so many of our players, it's pointless them being there if they aren't going to be used for what they are actually good at.

Soucek, no point
Ings, no point
Scamacca, no point
Paqueta, no point

He's just squandering talent to shoehorn things into a horrible 'system' that simply isn't working.

Some good old predictive text word replacements there :-)

Downed = Downes
Moves and Mouse = Moyes

Maybe they’re Freudian “slips” ?

Soucek has been a passenger for over a year. His effectiveness has waned in tandem with the team and its results. I have been obsessed with discussing him and the fact that in open play he’s like playing with 10 men.

I assume he gets picked solely because of his height and ability aerially when we defend corners / free kicks? Cannot think of anything else he does that is of value?

Quite simply, imho of course, he is not technically at the level required to play in the Premiership ( passing and control ) and is painfully slow by current standards in the league. I don’t know a slower player? Not a problem if you’re Modric or Pirlo who’s technique is superb and they’re seeing passes and quick thinking / decision making is worth a yard in pace.

Lovely fella but should have been benched last season. I would use Downes and Fornals before Soucek depending on the team we play. Some will say Downes was unspectacular last week in Europe but his job is just that … to win or intercept the ball, press and recycle it.

A modern manager would use Rice, Paqueta and Downes and get them to rotate which is what Brighton, Arsenal, City etc do. I watched Macalister for Brighton against Leeds. He was linking defence to midfield with the superb covering and interception work being done by Caciedo and Gross. They were moving constantly as a team.

Downes may not have what it takes but never gets a run of games and zero minutes in the Premiership. Moves sees the game as non dynamic and players like Downes as just a replacement if Soucek injured or Rice or Paqueta but only if Soucek not available. Keeps saying it takes a while when stepping up from the championship and because that’s what happened when he got Osman, Cahill and Jaglielka when he was at Everton. So it’s written in stone not based on his performances. Downed may be a “water carrier” but he always has the best passing accuracy and was top of the Championship with that and interceptions in his last season at Swansea. Mouse needs to give him a few games in his proper position to help release Paqueta and Rice to carry the ball or move further forward. However I realize this last sentence is not in the Moyesball handbook.

because yet again, it was a player we signed and then made no effort to play to his strengths so he looked fucking awful.

He looked ok when he was going forward at pace and involved in attacking play, but Pellegrini made him track back and defend and make tackles almost like a wing back, which he was fucking hopeless at. You could see he had zero confidence in what he was being asked to do for the team.

He just isn't that sort of player. Bit lightweight for the premier league anyway but given a really raw deal, and he just shrank and hid.

He had good pace and could run with the ball. Should have played him as a second striker as that's where he actually looked good.

Agree- how Lanzini or Downes didn't come on for him in the last 20 mins is crazy, just to offer something different.

He doesn't even make those runs into the box any more to get into goalscoring positions like when he was an effective player. I get that will be either because Moyes has told him not to, or because we are constantly on the back foot or defending so deep he can't keep running 80 yards up the the opposition box and back if we happen to win the ball and set Bowen or Benrahma away on the break- our only method of attack.

Even as a last resort Moyes could have stuck him up front for 15 minutes to have him get on the end of something in their box or knock the ball down to Bowen or Cornet to run on to, but no. Same old same old with no change or fresh ideas

He's a passenger. Partly because of his limitations, and partly because like countless other of our players, we simply aren't set up to play to any of his strengths. The players are really getting a raw deal from the manager and his baffling, shithouse tactics.

At least Emery made decisions that would try to beat us in spite of it making little difference to their season.

Moyes made the decision to settle for a point with the most uninspiring substitutions.

You have to feel for Moyes; week in, week out, he has to face and outsmart two opponents - the opposing team and his own players. No wonder the poor fellow looks like he’s been boiled.
