If we had a scouting network worthy of the name we should've been in the market for him at £14m rather than waste time and energy chasing Onana and subsequently Pacqueta

He did look good. Although I was convinced the commentator kept calling him 'Labia'...

I liked the look of Lavia for Southampton. Turns out he’s just 19. Apparently Chelsea already tried to get him for £50m in January, and Man City have a buyback option, so probably no chance of getting him in as Rice’s replacement.

Nah, it's really not in his own interests to sabotage us unless he's decided he's retiring because he'll be looking for a new job, but even then professional and personal pride will dictate he doesn't want this relegation on his CV, especially because if it's dissected, it's all on him as to why it's happened. No excessive injuries, good squad, well backed with transfers.

I'm not even sure he thinks it makes us stronger- I think he's just got an extremely rigid gameplan or way of playing that he can't or won't deviate from and he's just seeing Ings and Antonio as interchangable parts for the same machine rather than altering anything to play to their particular strengths or hide their weaknesses. We don't play any differently when Ings is the lone striker or Antonio is the lone striker. And therin lies a huge problem. Each circle on his pitch diagram has a rigid 'role' and he expects whatever player is that circle in any particular line up to play strictly within that role, rather than tweak how we play to what's available to him.

It's all completely back to front.

I did wonder if Moyes deliberately picks Soucek and has Ings up front alone to be a shit/because he thinks he’s gone the end of the season. But I’ve realised he genuinely thinks it makes us stronger which is even more worrying.

Our problem is that prior to these owners we were stated by the club to be ’The Academy of Football’ and just about had a glimmer of respect for this, over a decade down the line that is now hush, hush and we’ve had 2 managers that would be deemed anti football by most our support way back when….it seems by a lot of our following it is ok to not have possession of the ball? Because if we put our 3 chances away we would be ‘winners’…..? East London was once wonderful now it’s fucking boring….

Anyone else notice Ings say ''for fuck's sake'' as he was substituted? He must be well pissed off at the way we set up.

We shouldn't forget that Moyes spent all this money in the summer because he made a big song and dance about us evolving into more of a possession based team from a counter attacking.

We've gone backwards in our possession STATS. Only Forest and Bournemouth see less of the ball that we do.

We’ve won games in the last two seasons where we’ve had 30% ish possession.
Our problem is scoring goals.

Not a bit one on stats but to allow Southampton more possession is embarrassing.

It's criminal what we are doing with Scamacca. It's like buying a brand new Lambourghini and letting it rust in a barn using it as a chicken coop while you carry on driving in a knackered old dump truck that keeps breaking down and never gets where it's meant to be going.

Clearly Ings was Sullivan's 'throw of the dice' but was done with all the understanding of a braindead idiot who doesn't understand any nuance of football and just thinks 'any new striker = goals' as an assumed process like buying a new more expensive printing press to increase the output of mucky mags.

We were ALL saying Ings would make no difference whatsoever, despite being a very decent PL striker, if we didn't change the way we played and lo and behold we were all correct. Should have just got an Antonio clone from the championship.

I think every single person in the world agrees with that.... except one man. D. Moyes.

It's quite simple. You play two strikers.

My preferred option would be Scamacca and Ings with Scamacca just sitting a little deeper to be the target man. Play ball into him either into head, chest or feet - Let him bring it down and then bring other attacking players into play and them both he and Ings then get into positions to get on the end of things.

Thanks, stewie. My post looks like I'm commending Sullivan for what he did, when I didn't want it to.

Lets just hope we cling on to the division by the skin of our teeth. It's probably our best chance of Dumb and Dumber going in the summer.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Southampton - Official Match Thread
Sullivan bought Ings because he fucked up getting rid of Moyes to the point where (in Sullivan's opinion) there were no better options available. So he decided to throw money at the playing squad and add a proven premier league goalscorer in the hope we could stay up in spite of the manager.

" If Sullivan said 'Ings or nothing' then that's the only way any of it makes sense."

From what I gather (and I could be wrong), Moyes would have been happy with nothing (similar to the January before when he fucked it all up) had Sullivan not stepped in with Ings.

1. Unless it all kicks off at the training ground with Moyes and the players Moyes isn’t going anywhere until the end of the season.
2. If we go down Sullivan won’t sell.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Southampton - Official Match Thread - Preview
Yup, Ings is just another square peg in a round hole, another sticking plaster to treat a symptom rather than the actual root cause. He will be a total waste of money like Scamacca or any other striker that basically isn't a sprinter who can play football. It's so clear the one thing any striker of ours needs is pace and stamina, along with the ability to hold the ball up for 10 seconds if they can't just run past or through a defender until one of our other players can join them from the edge of our penalty area where they play 80% of the game.

If that quote from Moyes is true, then JESUS WEPT. Surely he can't have wanted him. Surely he's not that stupid to buy a player he knows he'll get no use out of and hasn't even analysed properly. If Sullivan said 'Ings or nothing' then that's the only way any of it makes sense.

Was really telling and really damning that Ings walked off shaking his head yesterday and did not look at the manager. He like so many others must be thinking 'What am I doing here? What's the point in this?'

No coincidence both his goals were from inside the six yard box where we've had sustained pressure around the box. That's his game. He can't just be a like for like like Antonio alternative, and that's the only kind of striker Moyes seems to set up to play with. Might as well just have Mbuemo on the bench as at least he's fast and will run himself into the ground.

Ings cuts an isolated lonely figure and is a complete waste of a shirt and substantial money as things stand. Unless we change how we play, he'll do nothing.
