Read shadow man last year, was really good.
Also, try Will Carver, went to school with him and his 1st book, Girl 4 was really good. He's just had his second book published but haven't read that yet.

Sorry I went off topic here, you said 'crime', so can I just apologize and say it's a crime if you don't read some stuff by these authors. My son likes the old Sherlock Holmes stuff, bless him!

Apart from The Upanishads ...

For a short book with a lot of sense, Buber's 'The Way of Man'. A Quaker organization give away a version online. An interesting read ... Murakami for something 'lighter' perhaps? I've only read the one about running which is good
