Have to disagree with that. On chances created Man City should have buried us quite easily. On goals conceded we're bottom 8 in the league, on xG against we're bottom 4! It's been another very poor campaign from a defensive perspective. And given Pellegrini's house style, I can't see it improving much.

Agreed andyd

Frustrating really. If you watch Carroll just before Lanzini threads that peach of a ball, he holds back a fraction, anticipating a cross and heading chance. That slight delay made him have to stretch and the only place the ball was going was up. He still made a good effort on target but either a Hernandez or Arnautovic would of probably timed it better and kept it on the ground...maybe maybe. Carroll put in more effort than Hernandez normally does so swings and roundabouts.
Having Lanzini playing definitely didn't weaken us.

I was just thinking how good our defense was.

Our previous managers could not get a 4 man defense to work. Now we have Pellegrini puttng a 4 man defense with no left back and including a kid making his debut and the league champions cannot get a goal from open play. What a development Pellegrini has given us. The high line we have is excellent.

Many on here thought it was impossible and kept calling for a 5 man back line way into the season.

Credit to Pellegrini.
Brilliant management
Pellegrini is the man!

I thought Fabianski might save the penalty as I saw that he put the penalty in the same place against Chelsea , so our goalkeeping coaches might know that.

also might have been good if he watch the game on the weekend seeing as we were playing them next.

We set out with a team designed to keep our better players fit and ready for Newcastle,
I am sorry for any of our fans that went to the Etihad with any hope of a win or a draw. Though Carroll might have done better it was just one chance in a sea of defensive duties

We didn't rest our better players, that's simply untrue.

Fredericks for Zab and Nasri for Snod strengthened the team IMO. Lanzini got the second half as he eases back to full fitness.

Obiang for Noble is arguable but I'd say bc Noble struggles against a mobile midfield then Obiang was a fair shout.

Arnie (virus) and Cress (broken toe) weren't fit hence Carroll and Johnson started. I'd say Carroll over Chich was a fair shout as Carroll is fresh and had the possibility of more joy v City as Chich really only relies on chances created for him.

Our better players - Fab, Diop, Ogb, Rice, Antonio, Anderson all started

I made a comment on one of the on-line newspaper reports about it being a soft penalty and taking a dive and loads ganged up on me calling me a Liverpool supporter. City fans are paranoid.

BBC commentary had it spot on.

It's the sort of decision which big teams often get but small teams don't,

Nailed on for me.

There SHOULD be some sensible guidelines issued with VAR but I am not holding my breath.
Some sort of understanding of what constitutes a penalty.
Obviously one is that if the forward initiated the contact it should be ruled out and a yellow card given.
If the fall (DIVE) was not caused by the contact then the same.

Obviously that WONT happen

'It depends on who the teams are and the mood of the referee at the time. VAR will do absolutely nothing to change this and the top sides will nearly always get the benefit.'

Since pretty much everything looks like a pen in slow-mo it will probably get even worse.

Does it really matter whether or not you or I felt it was a penalty?

I will change nothing and we had no answer to falling behind

Sven Roeder 2:27 Thu Feb 28
Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
If that’s a pen there would be about a dozen a game.
I look forward to us getting a similar award when one of our players rubs up against someone and loses the use of his legs.

Btw has Harry Kane been charged for putting his forehead in Azpilicueta’s face and pushing it against him yet?

Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread
For what it's worth, Dermot Gallagher on "Ref Watch" on Sky, opined that it wasn't a penalty. He also said, giving the penalty wasn't the biggest howler ever.

Iron Duke 2:19 Thu Feb 28
Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread
These kind of penalty decisions are very subjective and nearly always favour the “bigger” club. There is enough contact for the referee to give it, and in this case Anderson was pretty clumsy. However, this sort of coming together is often waved off by the referee.

It depends on who the teams are and the mood of the referee at the time. VAR will do absolutely nothing to change this and the top sides will nearly always get the benefit.

Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Cittee 82% possession and 22 shots
West Ham 18% possession and 2 shots

All you need to know really, on another night that could have been 6-0

We set out with a team designed to keep our better players fit and ready for Newcastle, Cardiff, Huddersfield and Everton... looking for 7-9 points from that lot before we face Chelsea, Mannure, Leicester and Spurs from which we might get 4-5 points if we play very well.

I am sorry for any of our fans that went to the Etihad with any hope of a win or a draw. Though Carroll might have done better it was just one chance in a sea of defensive duties

Lets not criticise a dodgy pen when we benefited from a Hand of God II goal on Friday night.

I know what a penalty is I just couldn't see any contact in that incident.
You've only got to look at certain teams get penalties every other game.

Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread
He only gave it because he didn’t give one about 30 seconds earlier,

Silva clocked there was an appeal and set out to go over again

He won’t get done though, those rules are only for the likes of West Ham and Everton

Norflundon 11:43 Thu Feb 28
Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread
That was never a pen and 100% a dive....not a coming together or soft penalty an stone wall dive. Somebody just bumped into me harder than that and I’m on crutches and I didn’t fall over and the fella clipped Lanzini far mor than Anderson brushed Silva just because there’s constact it doesn’t mean it’s a foul. Our player cheated last week to score a goal their player cheated to get a pen both are as bad as each other but let’s call how it is they are both cheats. Only because he plays for city and salah plays for the bin dippers your not allowed to call them that
