'if you don't run you don't play' is such a simple mantra to a seriously talented footballer.
It's exactly like saying 'give everything you've got but even quicker' and I can easily see the new boys stepping up to that given a few training sessions.
You could easily see that DZ were a bit shocked at the speed of our play.
No more 'pub team' stuff that's been widely pointed at us down the years and could you really argue with that assessment? When did you ever see a more fit, quicker West Ham in your life?
I'm fucking loving this adventure. Well done Moysie and your great coaches. Well done to the players who have clearly stepped up to the challenge.

Badly referee’d game to even make Lanzini get annoyed to do the lunge…..the ref made the game about winding up one team.

I thought Lanzini was having a good game until his crazy lunge when he was already on a yellow
The referee was hopeless and certainly in the first half gave everything to the home side wherever possible
The yellow card that Lanzini did get was a total nonsense. It wasn't even a foul!
It was a brilliant tackle, he had one foot on the ground while the other made perfect contact with the ball without the Zagreb player,who had just committed a foul, even being touched
The lunge he made for what should have been a second yellow and a sending off was poor. He was nowhere near the ball and caught the player with his desperate lunge. It could have cost us going down to 10 men
I got the impression that he was just trying too hard to impress, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, added to the fact that he was getting lumps kicked out of him all game without the referee noticing
I don't think Moyes had any other choice but to sub him before he got sent off

As Vexed and others have been discussing via this and other threads, as a West Ham fan I have been waiting for the inevitable "fading of the dreams" moment since our upturn in fortunes at the beginning of last season.
I suppose its ingrained into the pre-frontal cortex of me bonce after 60 years and I can never get confident before any game and even when, on occasions, we go three up I always think we need 4. The result of seeing us lose 4-3 from being 3-0 up about 4 times.
So now its the test of a resurgent Manchester United. We have had the odd memorable triumph over them down the years but its mostly been defeats and many heavy ones. Since 2019 I don't think we have got a point and they always seem to be the team that knocks us out the cup.
So the "voices in my head" ( the West Ham ones not the other more sinister ones) keep telling me in a voice that sounds like Eeyore .... "it will probably all go tits up next game" and the inevitable "lean times" we are used to will return. :-) In other words, a real test of the squad this weekend. Even if we cannot get a result so long as we give them a game and perform. You would think so such is their improvement in fitness, work rate etc. Maybe we could even get a result against the Sky "darlings" ? Oh no!! I can hear the "voices" again !

Still shocked by the game, really fearing the worse before kick off and that was logically the hardest game
Their tactics of sitting back in the first half bemused, maybe we were just that good and the fluidity and press did for them?
Either way we were superb, and were so without really hitting top gear

I know it's only been one game but I have a horrible sinking feeling about Vlasic. He was absent from the game against, what really were Championship quality opposition.
Give me strength......Vlasic has been with us a week and that Championship quality opposition spanked Spurs 3-0 in last years competition.

Ref Vlasic, it's not only too early to right him off, or in, but also too early to guise his strengths and weaknesses, and also his best position. I wasn't at all convinced with Fornals, but he has come good. 25.7 mil isn't peanuts, but you also aren't going to get a superstar for that amount.

There really wasnt much to complain about last night even for perennial miseries like me. Zouma and Fredericks were the pick in defence for me but all of them played really well. Upfront Antonio was being held/fouled from the first minute to when he left the pitch and the referee was very lenient on their handling of him but he shrugged it off and put in a great performance especially his link up play. Loved that moment he let the ball go through his legs to release Fredericks for his chance.
Lots of industry in midfield too. Lanzini played like he had snorted a bucket full of charlie and Fornals was his usual effective self. The Rice / Soucek axis was impenetrable and I thought that was Soucek back to his best after a few tired performances this year.
The only slight negative was Vlasic. Struggling with the pace and physicality of the game at times but its far too early to be coming to any conclusions. I remember Soucek was similarly off the pace and looked a but awkward in his first 2 or 3 games. Fornals too was written off but has been a slow burner and gets better all the time.
Vlasic will need to be educated into the system and drills the team all now follow. He will benefit from the coaching and improve to meet the demands of the premiership too I hope. That has been the feature of the Moyes era. If you are prepared to put in a shift ( and you could not fault his effort last night ) Moyes and team will work with you to improve your game, and become part of the way we play. So wait until Xmas before writing him off. I saw a few flashes of skill in addition to 100% effort to think he is definitely a player who could be a real handful longer term.
Anyway, a very enjoyable and satisfying evening and not the usual knicker wetting experience.

Can't be a booze issue regarding the advertising - Hieneken was prominent on the hoardings around the pitch.
Mind you..Hieneken...so COULD be a booze advertising ban.
More probable that the Betfair shirt sponsorship deal did not include European games. But I don't know.
