Just heard on radio Caroline internet radio they're doing a special tribute to Wilko.
Seeing as they still broadcast from Essex should be worth a listen

Ian Dury And The Blockheads at the Ilford Island

I was at that gig.

Re: Wilko Johnson RIP
Typically the burgers of Canvey hated the fact that Wilco survived a particularly aggressive form of cancer and wrote the whole thing off as 'career building'.

I remember being strictly punk rock (aged about 13 and my tiny teenaged brain not working properly) watching Dr Feelgood on Top Of The Pops and thinking how brilliant they were playing 'Milk And Alcohol' but it just blew my mind that they weren't a punk band.

I remember standing watching Ian Dury And The Blockheads at the Ilford Island running my hand over Italian Lucy's perfect tits thinking that life just didn't get any better than I felt at that moment.

I guess I was probably right.

This interview is worth a listen. It is largely about his terminal cancer diagnosis and how he felt liberated by it.

Haz... think John Martin and Sparks are still alive... they are not a part of the current line up. Saw a Feelgood tribute act down one of our local pubs a few months back... mainly playing all the old early stuff... very good they were.

Saw Feelgood at the Kursaal back in the 70s. Great band and Wilco, as mentioned, so underrated.

Did well to make it to mid 70s.

RIP

Brilliant guitarist and, despite his self deprecation, absolutely unique to him.
He says what he does is simple but it bloody well isn't. His songs were Dr Feelgood whike he was in them.
Will rewatch Oil City Confidential again - I just love the way he was still almost disbelieving of how well his career has panned out

Energy? You want energy?

This is from Wilko's time with the Blockheads. What a player and what a fucking band.

I work with someone who went to see Dr Feelgood in Hailsham just the other day. Not sure of the lineup though.

Re: Wilko Johnson RIP
Fucking LOVED Dr Feelgood. There can't be many of them still alive surely? I know that Lee has shuffled off this mortal coil a few years ago.

Whenever Wilko was in town, he managed to hoover up all the speed that was doing the rounds. I'm surprised he lasted into his 70's to be fair.

RIP Wilko. They broke the mould with you.

I, too, will be giving Oil City Confidential another outing later today.

I just watched the YouTube clip that Sold added to this thread. Jesus Christ! The energy for that 15 minutes was ridiculous!

I'm pretty sure the BBC just played out the Belgium v Canada match with a bit of Feelgood. Fair play to the producer concerned.

Re: Wilko Johnson RIP
Very sad news but Wilko had done well to go on so long seeing as he'd been written off a few years back.
Anyway I've always loved the Feelgoods and saw them plenty of times in the 70's including dagenham roundhouse, NE London Poly and The Kursaal.
They were the kings of the pub rockers.
RIP Wilko

Very sad news RIP

A very hardworking band - probably played every pub with a gig space south of the Watford Gap. I was far too young to see them live but that iconic album captures what the energy must have been really like. Not many live albums do that.

RIP you beautiful nutter!

Was there when him and the band did the last Tramshed gig.

He was all electric, goggle-eyed, mad energy.

Re: Wilko Johnson RIP
As a Canvey-born boy I'm proud that such a great, influential band came off the island. I was too young to see the Feelgoods in their prime but did get to see them with Lee fronting in 1992. In later times I was lucky to see Wilko perform a few times. The Oil City documentary is superb. RIP Wilko, you Canvey Legend.
