Now that Mykhaylo Mudryk has been unveiled as a Chelsea player, one of this winter’s great transfer sagas comes to its unexpected end. But will that stop Chelsea under Todd Boehly spending like Viv Nicholson? The answer is very probably not.
An offer of £26.5m for PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke is still on the table, and spending what could reach a €100m fee on Mudryk has not prevented interest in signing Enzo Fernández from Benfica or Moises Caicedo from Brighton, even if both deals will be difficult to pull off. Raheem Sterling, who cost almost £50m last summer but has struggled since may be shipped out. As yet, no takers are forthcoming.
Another player they’d like to jettison is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with Barcelona wanting him back to support Robert Lewandowski. The problem is that La Liga transfer window regulations may kibosh that deal. Aubameyang has already played for Barça this season and the previous precedent was Dani Ceballos being prevented from going on loan to Betis from Real Madrid five years ago having already played earlier that season as a full-time Betis player. The Spanish club are seeking further complications in doing one of those swap deals you hear about but only happen at Barça. Franck Kessié on loan in exchange for Internazionale’s Croatian World Cup star Marcelo Brozovic is the proposal.
With Mudryk off the table, Arsenal are still looking for someone to bolster their forward line. Leandro Trossard, who left the UK on Friday after a row with Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi, is a possibility, and out of contract this summer. On Saturday De Zerbi said he was willing to end hostilities: “I am ready to open the door for him because he is a good guy and he is a very good player for us, very important player.” Tottenham are another club linked with Trossard. Mikel Arteta’s club are elsewhere linked with Raphinha and Ferran Torres of Barcelona as it becomes clear Gabriel Jesus will be out for a while yet. Raphinha will cost almost as much as Mudryk, according to reports in Spain. Another possibility is Luiz Henrique of Real Betis, who Manchester United also want to add to their collection of wingers. And there’s an old favourite, too: Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, who would cost Arsenal £71m, having been their big target 12 months ago but failed to settle in Turin.
The Trossard development came after Brighton’s hammering of Liverpool on Saturday, and that result, and dreadful performance, may be the end of a couple of players’ time at Anfield. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was an ineffectual starter on the left of the attack while Naby Keïta came on as an ineffectual sub. Any takers? Liverpool hope so, and want Rúben Neves from Wolves. It wouldn’t be the transfer window without Neves being linked to one of Liverpool or United.
Wolves, with Julen Lopetegui presiding over a revival, want to spend, and Pablo Sarabia of PSG, the Spanish international, available at a cut-price, is wanted. A deal for João Gomes, the Brazilian from Flamengo, is imminent, too.
Leicester, who seem to be going in the opposite direction to Wolves, are also looking to add to their squad, but Nicolás González, the Argentinian forward, is not for sale, say Fiorentina. And neither is World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat, who has been linked with filling the vacuum that has lately become Liverpool’s midfield.

David Moyes has blasted Manchester United over the way he was sacked as manager in 2014.
Moyes, now West Ham boss, was axed at Old Trafford after 10 months in charge following his arrival from Everton.
And in a YouTube interview with businessman Steven Bartlett, the Scot hit out at former United chief Ed Woodward over the manner of his depature, insisting he was not told about the sacking 'in the right way' by the top brass.
He said: 'I always think you have to give bad news well. You're the boss, you run a really big business like Manchester United. If you've got any class or any style, when you're having to give bad news out, it has to be done in a good way.
'I felt the way I was told (about the sacking) wasn't done as well as it should've been. It could've been done better and made a lot easier. Looking back now, you think 'hey, that's life, get on with it' but if you're one of the biggest sports businesses in the world, if not the biggest, you would hope you would do things correctly.
'I found out about my sacking through the media. I tried to make contact and say 'why don't we meet up' but it didn't suit and before I knew it they called me in the day afterand the whole world knew about it before I got to know.
'Sometimes people want to get it done right and I didn't think it was right. But I genuinely don't have any real gripe about it because of the industry I'm in.'
Moyes is under pressure as Hammers boss, with his side currently in the relegation zone and level with bottom side Southampton on 15 points after a 1-0 loss against fellow strugglers Wolves.
On Saturday, he admitted he 'was not winning enough games' and called for fans to stand behind the team through the difficult period they are experiencing.

West Ham have held further talks with Lorient over a potential £25million deal for striker Terem Moffi.
The proposal is understood to be £20m with a further £5m for Moffi, a Nigeria international, who has scored 12 goals in 18 games this season.
Having arrived at the French club in 2020, the 23-year-old has racked up 59 goals in 135 games and helped them avoid a relegation scrap last season.
That experience could come in handy if he was to move to East London, with the Hammers currently sat 18th in the Premier League after an alarming run of form.
David Moyes' side are now winless in their last seven games, with their last victory coming against fellow strugglers Bournemouth in October.
Bringing in a fresh striker with experience battling at the wrong end of the table could be vital if the East London side are to turn their season around.
It comes as Moyes has been looking to add fresh impetus amid interest from Wolves and Chelsea in Michail Antonio.
Chelsea considered taking Antonio on loan last week but that idea was rebuffed. West Ham may however consider permanent offers.
The Blues may have not interest after completing the signing of Ukrainian winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.

‘No secret’ Newcastle, West Ham and Nottingham Forest in picture for huge signing
Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United are all labelled as potential destinations for AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.
This scenario is reported by Voce Giallorossa, who claim the Serie A side are currently wondering about what they’ll do with the player.
Market rumours are said to be surrounding Zaniolo lately, and the website points out that it’s ‘no secret’ that Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and West Ham are all interested in his signing.
Roma are said to be open to negotiating his transfer, and according to the report, they could ‘seriously consider’ his sale in case an offer of around €20-25m is submitted.
The club’s priority is actually said to be different, as they’d like to first extend Zaniolo’s contract, which expires in 2024, and only then negotiate a transfer for €35-40m.
One problem is that the player’s agent Claudio Vigorelli has been in phone calls with Premier League clubs and testing the ground for the transfer. That’s why Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and West Ham all stand a chance in the battle for him.

Report: West Ham consider Cornet replacement
West Ham are this morning being linked with PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke and his potential arrival at the London Stadium could finally provide a solution to the Maxwel Cornet saga.
The report suggests the Irons are one of several Premier League sides who have been watching the 20-year-old winger, who has thrived since switching to the Eredivisie side from Tottenham Hotspur three seasons ago.
Madueke had recently been linked with a move to Chelsea, but this now seems unlikely following their signing of Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Since then, he has made nearly 80 senior appearances for the PSV, contributing 20 goals and 14 assists, despite suffering a number of injuries.
Whilst the form seems decent enough it’s hard to make a case for the inflated price tag the Dutch club are asking. If West Ham really are lining up Madueke as Cornet’s replacement it would seem foolish given his injury record.
The young winger is quick, tricky, athletic and a certainly someone PSV would be reluctant to release. Reports have indicated that Madueke could cost as much as £40m,
It remains to be seen how much truth is in this rumour but it’s certainly less believable than yesterdays Terem Moffi links.
