Danny Fenn The Boleyn Poet
THAT VIEW
I can almost taste the burgers
Frying on the griddle
And can almost smell the manure
And strong smelling horse piddle
I sense the bustle from the market
And the buzz coming from the Queens
The firm outside Charlene's wine bar
Dressed in pringle jumpers in their teens
The smell of sizzling bacon and eggs
From Ken's and hot dog stalls
Jibbing down Selsdon Road
When the shout of nature calls
Paying for my match day programme
Chat to Gary from over land and sea
Spot the castle turrets
Always felt like home to me
Pop into the off licence
And grab a couple of cans
Wait to give a verbal greeting
To the worried looking away fans
Pass St Edwards primary school
The players car park and the church
Spot the autograph hunters
Eagerly stood on their perch
Pass the corner of Castle Street
Where once the South Bank roared
Where Paulo a magical little Italian
Once majestically scored
Pop into the supporters club
Spot faces old and new
All there for a common cause
The love of the claret and blue
Wander past the Boleyn pub
Green Street meets Barking Road
A place where songs were sung
And beer and banter flowed
Cross to the champions statue
And bow to Sir Alf Ramsey,s boys
Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters
And Bobby who played with such poise
Join the queue at Nathan's
For a pre match two and two
Or into cassataris
For a sarnie and a brew
Turn into Priory Road
Join the queue for the chicken run
Come on you irons
The day has just begun
I'd give anything to go back in time
To catch a glimpse of that view
But now my home is Stratford
Sadly moved on to pastures new

We may not be going back but there's still hope of getting a stadium that's fit for football

REALLY !?

I think we have 2 hopes on that one …

Re: Danny Fenn The Boleyn Poet
It’s all too recent for me. For example he completely overlooks going to and from the ground by trolley bus.And he fails to eulogise the longest urinal trough in England ( found beneath the old wooden chicken run ).

We may not be going back but there's still hope of getting a stadium that's fit for football. I think plenty of us would find it easier not to 'wallow' if that were the case.

That will still leave the fact that GSB lied to facilitate the move and that wont, and should not, be either forgiven or forgotten. For many, something at the very heart of supporting West Ham died either through the move itself of the way it was foisted upon us.

Lest we forget as far as I'm concerned.

The last line should have been;

I miss UP, matchdays aren't the same but all this miserable wallowing in nostalgia is just fucking annoying now

We're not going back, how many times does someone need to say they miss the place?

nerd

I felt the same way about the ground after the terraces had gone, but once we moved to the OS, I realised it wasn't so bad at the latter day Upton Park.

But the poem talks more about the surroundings. As much as people moaned about it, I never stopped getting a buzz walking out of Upton Park tube station and looking at the scene around me. Surrounded by residential areas, (the backstreets - oi oi oi)! along with loads of pubs and small businesses, be they small shops or the pop up stalls. I know I sound like a dinosaur, but THAT is what a football stadium should be surrounded by.

That shit hole was better, for me, than the sterile hole that surrounds our current rental.

What a complete load of shit, like every other poem he's ever done.

It never felt the same once the North and south bank went. I missed the real boleyn for years after never really felt the stadium was right after that , something had gone.

Re: Danny Fenn The Boleyn Poet
I never got why it mattered that it was a shithole, of course it was a shithole, but you never lived there, just went for a few hours once a fortnight, hardly a biggie to 'suffer' it. it was home, shithole or not, and at least it felt you like you were at football. Similar to many grounds in the country.

I've still not been to the new shithole and in no hurry to.

Whatever you think of Green Street (nobody's disputing it's a right old dump of an area), it was where you turned up to expectant, and where you left from happy or sad or neither. Love it or loathe it, it's part of you.

I’m with Danny. I miss that dump, with all my heart.

Re: Danny Fenn The Boleyn Poet
Green St was/is an absolute dump

The only issue with the move is the stadium. If we were close to the pitch and the upper tiers not 5 miles from the pitch then would have been great

I miss our stadium being a authentic football ground, not anything around Upton Park and green st.
