Got a Philips Ambilight 9000 series led. Fantastic bit of kit, the colour changing led Ambilights around the sides of the tv light up the walls so you get the appearance of a much bigger viewing experience (not a gimmick, really works well). Has wifi and internet tv, so is linked to moderm, and all the laptops are connected to it, great for viewing photos and downloaded Xvids! great sound for a led/lcd tv, but still use the yamaha 5.1 for films though! Really easy to link up other divices with the easy link feature! Only down side is it takes alot of fucking around to get the perfect picture, but once your there, Wow

There's no 'allegedly' about it. When Panasonic bought Pioneer the first thing they did was stop making the Kuro as they cost so much to build they were actually losing money selling them. It was a willy-waving 'we make the best telly in the world' exercise that they couldn't afford in a recession.
If you don't care about 3D (and who does?) it's still the best TV ever made.

You didn't go wrong anywhere mate- that is a very nice telly. There again if anyone's bought any telly they really like they haven't gone wrong either.
Some people genuinely prefer the slightly brash 'super-real' look of an LED and think a plasma is a bit dull. Some people don't notice or have any opinion either way as they've got better things to do with their lives. I sometimes wish I was like that. I'm not though.
Sand iron, that's a difficult question to answer but for ultimate picture it's probably a top-of-the-range Panasonic but they're a bit boring as a piece of furniture when switched off. For looks, features and skinny-ness it's probably the Samsung 8000 series although some will always love the look of a preposterous and madly expensive Bang and Olufsen.
They all sound shit though. If ever there was a disparity that is so wide that it's almost funny it's the fabulous picture a big HD TV gives you coupled with the shitty tinny sound coming out of it. I think that if you're buying a big flat-screen you've got to budget for a decent amp and speakers.
The thing most people don't realise is that HD is almost as much about the sound as the pictures. Watching a film or playing a game is a million times better with sound coming from all around and a sub-bass unit rattling your fillings out when something explodes. You CAN hide it pretty well in a bookcase or behind the sofa too, to the extent that you can get away with the hi-fi lover's best lie- 'new? we've had that there for months you silly moo!'

don't worry about being trendy - buy a plasma - better picture quality and cheaper.

Just bought a Sony BDVEF200 3D blu ray home cinema system for 160 quid from amazon. Sound is lots better and only 2 speakers and a sub woofer if you don't want wires everywhere.
Not as good as the expensive ones but a bargain at that price

Ah yes forgot pioneer, used to love there amplifiers too, if you were lucky enough to have a nice pioneer (separate's preferably) sound system, you could really impress your mates.

I've just recently bought a Sony KDL40EX520 40" LED and it's bloody magnificent.
Sounds shit, so I bought the Sony BDVE280 Blu-Ray & Surround Sound too.
Just trying to fiddle round with the positioning of the speakers and actually setting up the tv config properly now.
Anyone had any experience with those setup dvd's?

Pioneer were the benchmark a few years back!
Nothing has really surpassed some of them yet.(Allegedly)

What is considered the best make in tv's now then?
I know Sony were supposedly the benchmark a few years back, but a lot of people seem to rate the samsung nowadays, also the panasonic viera are rated highly.

There's some nonsense being spread around on this thread as usual.
If you get a Samsung LED you'll never know if it's actually that brilliant until you watch a decent letterboxed film with the ambient lights lowered.
They look great in (some) shops but the problem is that Samsung make so much stuff that they make the first run of TVs to a great standard, usually in their lovely factories in the far-east then ship the remainder to sub-contractors all over the place as boxes of bits for them to put together. Where the screen meets the bezel in an LED screen it's crucial to do the screws up to the absolute Nth degree or you get 'torch spots'- like someone is pointing a torch at the edge of your screen.
I've had two pals who have sent Samsung TVs back as these spots are so fucking annoying when watching a decent (usually BluRay or DVD) feed. One pal did it 3 times on his 8000 set and finally gave up and kept it.
LED (which as someone pointed out IS LCD) is very nice but for the ultimate in quality a good plasma (like a Panasonic VT30) is best. Forget B&O and Loewe as you're just paying for the name.
As for the poster who lives on his own and wants better sound I absolutely love my wireless headphones that the missus plonks on my head when she goes to bed so my 5.1 theatre system doesn't wake her up. They're great for listening to the news as you do the washing up too.

I have got a samsung 40" tv that I have got my sky hd running through.
The volum is shit at best.
What would the digital aged folk on who recommend I get....
I don't want my living room looking like a pimped up teenagers bedroom.
I just want to hear in my old age.....
Any recommendations are appreciated.
Also I only want to hear it myself. I'm not interested in some massive thing with a million speakers
Cheers in advance

It's decent enough from what I've seen, just a bit gimmicky. It doesn't really improve the football.
As more and more films come out though, that's where it'll get good. Avatar is supposed to be immense but I've not watched it at home.
Tonight is David Attenborough's Flying Monsters in 3D. I can't see how that can disappoint.

I've gone 3D and it's pretty decent to be honest. Not sure how much I'll use it but I can't see it being an issue to pop the glasses (cheap as chips with LG) on for the odd film.
3D football..... hmmmmm....

Whatever TV you're getting, if you're spending over £500 then it's worthwhile making sure that you position it for optimum viewing, get yourself additional audio capability and then spend £100+ having it calibrated for the optimum picture.
Definitely read AVForums - they will have a dedicated thread for each TV you're considering and will also give some ideas about calibrating it.
