PORTSMOUTH v WEST HAM UNITED
npower CHAMPIONSHIP
SATURDAY 14 JANUARY 2012
KICK-OFF: 3PM

West Ham United return to league action at Portsmouth this Saturday sitting joint-top of the npower Championship with Southampton. Both teams have 47 points from 25 games, but the Saints, who go to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, have a plus 19 goal difference compared to the Hammers' 17.

Team news

PORTSMOUTH

Veteran striker Nwankwo Kanu could miss out with a back injury that kept him out of the Chelsea cup game last Sunday. It means Adam Webster, a 17-year-old striker, could retain his place in the squad.

Former Portugal defender Ricardo Rocha is struggling with a knock, while winger Luke Varney is battling to be fit following a medial knee ligament problem.

WEST HAM

Robert Green, James Tomkins, Julien Faubert, Papa Bouba Diop, Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan and Carlton Cole could all return after being rested at Hillsborough.

Abdoulaye Faye has returned to full training, having not played since 10 December at Reading.

SKY BET

Portsmouth 15/8
Draw 23/10
West Ham 7/5

REFEREE

Saturday's referee will be Kevin Friend.

...and BTW...I'm not advocating style over substance football

We need to be effective...low risk...capitalizing on opponents' weaknesses/10 men etc etc...Go for the Jugular...as soon as possible after scorinbg the first goal...

...Automatic Promotion is THE OBJECTIVE....not tippy tappy Zolaesque triangles...!!!

I'd trust your old man's opinion far ahead of leigh Jim any day...

;=0)))

BTW my opinion based on radio commentary...with Rufus Brevett...is excatly the same as your old man's...

Should have tried for the second goal ASAP as we got the first...NOT relied on defending a 1-0...anything can happen...and usually does with dodgy Refs & Linos innthe NPower...

# Valuable...Twitchy Bum Points IMO...

Awful game. West Ham never seemed to have a grip on the game. Not particularly fun to watch.

2010- a lot of ball around their area without a cutting edge does not constitute good play in my books
You could count on one hand the passages of play which were swift moving with a bit of an end product
Before you ask yes I was there today and that today was a means to an end!!!
The only good thing was the result!

I know a lot of Pompey boys and they like us, and hate Millwall, so good result against a decent bunch.

Re: Portsmouth v West Ham - Official Match Thread
A decent game and cracking atmosphere, we played a lot of good stuff and deserved to win by a lot more goals. They only looked dangerous from set plays.
Had we ruined a strong performance by pouring foward for the second and conceded an equaliser in the last 25 minutes i would have been livid.

Can't be arsed to read through the thread, but as long as we win promotion I don't care how we play as long as we get the job done. BFS has been hired to get us promoted and I am sure that's what he'll do. Next season could be a whole different ball game if you'll excuse the pun!!!

I don't expect it to get any better as Allardyce knows that it's promotion at all costs as do most of us on here!

what does `promotion at all` costs actually entail ?

I was also impressed by Pompey fans. Most stayed to the end and thats something I rarely see especially when we're at home. I can't say that they sang very much though. I also couldn't see what they had against the ref, maybe a couple of small decisions could have gone their way..... unless I missed something.

We had Talksport on in the car on the way home. I would like to thank all those Spurs fans phoning in moaning their heads off the deluded twats. Slagging off the players, harry, the fact that they hadn't signed anyone. They completed a good day for me. I fucking hate them with venom.

I love Fratton Park as a ground, give me it any day of the week over the likes of Brighton or Southampton......

BUT whenever we play there it's always so fucking cold

I was actually impressed by the fact that the majority of their fans remained until the end and were singing their hearts out, unlike many supporters of other clubs who have streamed out well before the end, this season.

I've been to Fratton several times as I live 10 miles away - always a shitheap but the home fans generate an intimidating atmosphere.
