West Ham laboured to their 8th away victory for the season and in the process condemed Portsmouth to just their 3rd away win to keep the pressure on Southampton at the top of the table and move clear of the chasing pack.
Green 6 One great save from Lawrence in the first half and stready
O'Brien 6 An improvement on his form of late but still hitting too many aimless long balls
Reid 6 Won his 2nd Pen in two games and defended for the most part ok
Tomkins 6 MOTM Turned in another decent defencive performance on the whole
McCartney 6 Defended well with almost no protection for much of the game and got forward as much as he could
Faubert 4 Poor overall, maybe had a shout of a penalty but was poor in possession of the ball and in the challenge
Nolan 6 One of his better games, put a real shift in but should have taken one of his 2 good chances.
Noble 6 Just scrapes a 6 because he scored a penalty, are pens easy? Just ask Rooney and Baldock but overall although he played in parts some nice football he was a little lacking on his best
Collison 5 After a return to form in the middle of the park, Jack was put out wide, mostly on the right and shown nothing good bar a few flashes of ability and hit the woodwork
Diop 6 With Tomkins and Cole the better of the players today, wins so much, if only he could pick the pass more than half the time
Cole 6 2nd game on the spin he's played well enough with sniffing out a chance, won plenty and never shy from the battle.
Lansbury for Faubert 6 Better from him, willing to pick the ball up and run at the Portsmouth defence

Another game with us not conceding is very very encouraging. I am now very much looking forward to the game against Nottingham which I will be attending. I do hope that Mr Allaydyce buys a goal scorer by that game as we need many goals and more entertainment.

Well at least you guys actually saw a so called proper West ham XI on your travels...
The match report in the Mail on Sunday was interesting today... I swear it went.... Portsmouth 0 West Ham United 1... Pompey bloke got sent off, Noble scored penalty...
and that was it.... smallest ever game report I have ever seen for us

I'd agree with that, KIA - but that last bit is the part that has pissed me off the most. We were clearly better than them, even when they had 11 on the pitch. To be one up, against ten men, and not seem bothered about smashing them to bits is unforgivable for me. McCartney's little triangles with Noble and Nolan, then failing to get any sort cross in - what the fuck is all that about?
Southampton smashed Forest yesterday, after Forest had a man sent off. They were away from home, same as us. They didn't even have the bloke who's scored 15 for them, it will take Cole 3 years to score that many?

We did control the game for the first 35 minutes, then they had a dangerous little spell before half time and come out the better in th 2nd half.
"Then, of course, the game changed completely when we went down to ten men and we dominated completely and the gameplan changed"
Again we did all bar the dying moments but seemed content to keep the ball rather than laugh repeated attacks.

P - its something thats always puzzled me about English football, this 'target' man concept. Which is the bigger target, Carlton Cole's head, or the massive spaces in behind and down the sides of defenders?
The inclusion of a 'target' man makes players lazy as well, for me. It encourages them not to think and they just smash balls forward hoping that the target man will hold them up. I'd like to see players forced to take more responsibility and make some decisions about the right/wrong pass to play. If they're not capable of finding a team mate from 10 yards then they shouldn't be playing professional football.
And before I get jumped on for that, none of that is a criticism of CFC or BFS - its a general comment about the English game.
