Anyone know why West Ham and Arsenal both wore away kits in 1980?

Watched the Swansea v Arsenal game earlier and it was mentioned that it was rare for both sides on TV to be wearing white shorts and socks, and just got me thinking about the 1980 Cup Final and why West Ham and Arsenal wore their away kits in the Final?
I've looked online and there are various answers ranging from lucky kits to TV Rules but no-one seems to be 100% sure so does anyone know the real reason?

I've had to interrupt my "work", go downstairs, turn the video on, and check the PL highlights to confirm something I already knew without any doubt!

Think Ron has a point though, socks are always supposed to be different colours, giving the ref greater clarity in assessing tackles/fouls, think it is in the laws of the game. A point that I believe northernammer has already made.

There's no problem with wearing the same colour shorts, and I am not aware of two teams ever wearing the same colour socks.

West Ham lost the coin toss and were forced to wear the away shirt. Arsenal decided they were going to wear their 'lucky' away shirts as well.
West Ham losing that coin toss always tarnishes that final result for me.

That's the story I remember, no idea if that is 100% true but makes sense as Arsenal wouldn't have been able to wear their home kit either because the clash of shorts so played in their away kit as well

I agree about kit clashes. I don't see how you can wear the same shorts and socks.
I had a nightmare a few years ago watching us play Birmingham at home as I am colour blind.
