'Britain is colonialist, ludicrous and archaic': Sean Penn blasts UK for refusing to hand over Falklands to ArgentinaU.S. actor said diplomacy needed to resolve the issue He is 'firmly' on the side of the South Americans
Comments came as he met Argentine President Cristina Kirchner yesterday
Sean Penn has branded Britain 'colonialist' for its refusal to hand over the Falkland Islands to Argentina. The actor said that the UK was being 'ludicrous and archaic’ by believing it could hold on to what he called ‘the Malvinas Islands of Argentina’. He added that diplomacy was needed to resolve the issue but that he was firmly on the side of the Argentinians. Scroll down for video
Controversial: Actor Sean Penn (left), pictured here with Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner (right) yesterday, has branded Britain 'colonialist' for its refusal to hand over the Falkland Islands Penn's comments could inflame relations between Britain and Argentina just weeks away from the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War on April 2. Prince William is currently on six-week military deployment there as a helicopter pilot in the face of sabre rattling from the Argentine authorities.

In advance of his arrival the foreign ministry even claimed he would be arriving ‘in the uniform of a conquistador’. Penn was meeting with Argentine President Cristina Kirchner yesterday. It has led to him being branded a 'communist ***hole' by former Miss Venezuela and Colors co-star Maria Conchita Alonso who was angry with his support of the left-wing South American leader.
The friendship blossomed after Penn spent £40,000, in 2002, on an open letter in the Washington Post to then U.S. President George W Bush demanding an end to the cycle of violence.
He criticised the administration for its 'deconstruction of civil liberties' and 'simplistic and inflammatory view of good and evil' as it embarked on its War on Terror and planned to attack Iraq.
Chavez later quoted from the missive during a televised speech.
The Mystic River star has also visited Iran, Iraq, and Cuba - and most recently has been seen in Libya (following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime) and Egypt (after Hosni Mubarak was ousted).
In 2005 he helped rescue people in New Orleans, Louisiana, who had been injured by Hurricane Katrina. But some thought it was merely a PR stunt.
And following the 2010 Haiti earthquake he co-founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organisation to run a 55,000 person tent camp.
It led to him being designated, last month, by President Michel Martelly as Ambassador-at-Large for Haiti, the first time that a non-Haitian citizen has been designated as such in the country's history.
During the meeting he urged Britain to join UN-sponsored talks over what he called the ‘Malvinas’, as the Falklands are otherwise known in Spanish. And in the conversation the Mystic River star said: ‘The world today is not going to tolerate any ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology.’ Penn, 51, has a history of making outspoken comments and has passionately championed the left-wing causes he supports. He has paid £40,000 to take out a full page advert in the Washington Post to attack the Bush White House for its ‘deconstruction of civil liberties’. The advert also called vice president Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ‘villainously and criminally obscene people’. The letter was seized on by Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez with whom Penn later established a friendship. Penn also went to New Orleans to help out with the reconstruction efforts after Hurricane Katrina and has also made Haiti another of his causes following the 2010 earthquake. The British government has repeatedly said that those living on the Falklands have the right to decide under which country they want to be governed. But the 2,500 strong population have repeatedly said in polls that they are happy to remain under British rule. Adding to recent tensions are plans by London to develop potential offshore oil deposits around the Falkland Islands, which Argentina is keen to stop from happening. The Falklands have been in British hands since 1833 but in 1982 the Argentinian junta invaded, sparking the 74-day war which the UK won. Children in Argentina however are taught that the English illegally took the country in 1833 and have held onto it since.

Why should William not go out? The RAF have perhaps 2 dozen search and rescue pilots all doing their bit. If William , who is trained and available , doesnt go, Someone else has to. These boys need theie R and R serving in various theatres around the world. Six months at home with the family every couple of years is neccessary. If he stays here some else has two tours in the falklands.

I suggest a compromise on this. This is the deal.
Argentina gets West Falklands, and just to make sure we both benefit, any oil revenues from the marine shelf around he Falklands is split 50/50 UK-Argentina.
In return, I personally get to fiddle with as many Argentinian women's arses as i want, into perpetuity.
Is it a deal?

"There are many places to deploy the prince. It's not necessary, when the deployment of a prince is generally accompanied by warships, to send them into the seas of such shared blood."
Yep adnd there's no fucking need to call the Argentine National Football league the Belgrano either.

The official reason for wanting the Falklands will not be oil, so what do they possibly have to claim 'ownership' of the land? No historical claim, and the location isn't exactly on their side being 400 miles off the Argentine coast.
The people have the right to self determination and they choose to remain under the governorship of the United Kingdom.

"In 1947, the United Kingdom offered to submit the case to the International Court of Justice at The Hague, but Argentina refused the offer. A unilateral application by the United Kingdom in 1955 to the Court in respect of Argentine encroachment ended in deadlock when Argentina announced that it would not respect the decision of the court."
We tried dialogue, they didn't want it. They invaded, we humiliated them. They are now causing major problems, exactly as they did prior to the Falklands War and then whinge that we are "militarising" the issue. The Islanders wish to remain British.
There is absolutely no scope for dialogue. If Penn is so enraged, I suggest he signs up to the Argentinian Army and has a proper crack and sorting this out.

No, there is no scope for compromise on this. I care fuck all about the falklands with or without oil, but if those living there want to be free from tyranny, it is our responsibility to help them out. The argies legal claims are dodgier than a scouser with a bad back. If the falklands are theirs, why bot California to Mexico or Australia to Indonesia? Fuck them.
