The Maccabees - Given to the Wild

To be honest I didn't know much about these until I heard the single Pelican. Bought the album on the strength of that but it has taken me about a month to fully get into it.
Unlike the single, the rest of the album is downbeat and often melancholic, akin to Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden.
The songs aren't instantly loveable, but with every listen it gets more and more into your head. Slow burning with tiny bursts of life, this is turning into a masterpiece every bit as good as classics like Spirit of Eden and Funeral.
To think that the record label were worried about this album. Fair play to them for showing faith.

I lived next door to the lead singer at uni.
I don't like them.

Really pleased this band are getting some recognition. I recommend both of their first two albums. There are much better tracks than Pelican on them.

It's grown on me too, I don't think it's miserable or downbeat, it's just subtle. Pelican is the first single and catchy but it's definitely not the best track, not even close. There's four in a row that blow me away every time I hear them: Feel to Follow, Ayla, Glimmer and Forever I've Known.
"Heave" sounds too much like Coldplay for my liking, but other than that it's a masterpiece. I bought it two weeks ago and have listened to virtually nothing else since.
Highly recommended.

Love 'Pelican'
I'll probably get this on Spotify.
Best song I've heard this year so far is 'Comeback Kid' by Sleigh Bells. Their new record should be good.

I think you can download it for a fiver, welwyn. Definitely worth it if you like Pelican. You might need a bit of patience with it but it is absolutely beautiful.

Pelican is the best tune I have heard in ages. Don't think I'll be buying the Album if it's miserable. Not many new bands seem to play tunes with any major chords in them
