Chelsea v West Ham FA Cup - Match Report

FA Youth Cup – 5th Round
Chelsea 3 – 3 West Ham (5-4 on Pens)
A heartbreaking end to a thrilling match saw The West Ham Academy side lose 5-4 on penalties to a very good Chelsea side who go on to play Nottingham Forest in the last 8. Played at the home of Staines FC the noisy crowd of 1,588 many of whom were cheering on West Ham would be entertained by the two strong sides.
The big news before the game was that Rob Hall would miss the game and likely the rest of the season with a torn cartlidge. Kieran Sadlier replaced him and apart from David Wooton in goal for the injured Jake Larkins the team was unchanged from the last round of the cup.
The impressive Chelsea Side started the match well and put a lot of early pressure on the young Hammers causing David Wooton to pull off a number of excellent saves. That hard work was undone in the 11th minute when the ball was pulled back for Baker to side foot home for an early Chelsea lead.
The Blues continued the pressure as West Ham’s 4 man midfield struggled to keep possession thankfully David Wooton was having a brilliant game and handled all that was thrown at him for the rest of the half.
Towards the end of the half The Hammers wearing claret and blue were looking more comfortable and created a couple of chances of their own, the two most memorable were both from Taylor Miles, the first made the 10 Foot Chelsea Keeper (he really is huge) pull off a good save, the second however was even better as he collected a clearance and thumped his left footed drive into the top corner, a brilliant equaliser.
The second half started similar to the first with Chelsea having most of the possession, their 4-2-3-1 formation meant we were struggling to create much. David Wotton was called upon once again around 55mins when an excellent move down the right for Chelsea saw a dangerous ball put across the six yard box only for the young goalkeeper to block once again. The large West Ham support were really getting behind their young team and Bubbles could be heard around the ground, something very unusual at Youth games and something I know the team appreciated.
West Ham needed to make a change to get back in the game and Kieran Sadlier was the one to make way for Dominic Vose, Sadlier is a very promising player but just couldn’t seem to get into this game. Vose is very good at keeping possession which is just what the hammers needed.
But it was Chelsea who would take the lead once more after a defence splitting through ball saw the fast Feruz one on one with Wooton and he made no mistake this time. Kenzer Lee got injured in the move which meant he was replaced by Frazer Shaw who went to left back and Dan Potts moved to centre back.
From that moment on West Ham were the better team, the 4-4-2 changed to a more effective 433, they controlled possession a lot better and looked dangerous every time they attacked. The possession paid off in the 77th minute when Vose who had changed the game picked the ball up in the centre and made a good run, a one-two with Elliott Lee made an opening for him to lay off to Blair Turgott who hammered it home from the edge of the area. A well deserved equaliser for the Eastenders.
Lamar Hurley came on straight away after the goal for the tiring Miles and the away side continued to dominate. As 4 minutes injury time was coming to a close Vose again went on a good run this time laying off for Elliott Lee who slid the ball into the far corner to score his 15th goal of the season. Mad celebrations as the team felt that must have snatched a last minute victory. That feeling didn’t last long though as Chelsea came forward straight from kick off and hit the post, the rebound found Chalobah who had an easy finish. What an end to an exciting 90mins.
Extra time was pretty uneventful compared to the 90 mins before and was littered with mistakes from both teams, which is understandable as the players tired and many cramped up. But Nick Haycocks lads did well to pick themselves up from the disappointment of the late equaliser and saw the game through to penalties.
Penalties must have been so nerve wracking to the young players playing in front of such a big crowd for them and what was at stake but it was Turgott who stood up first for West Ham and calmly slotted away. Chalobah made it 1-1. With such a big goalkeeper it seemed shooting low was the best option and that is what Lee did only to see the keeper save it. Blackman the Chelsea keeper was so far of his line it was amazing that a retake wasn’t ordered. Piazon makes no mistake 2-2.
The next three penalties for West Ham was a lesson in how to take them, Jack Powell, Leo Chambers and Dan Potts all bury their chances brilliantly leaving Feruz needing to score for the win – he fires over!
Sudden Death and Dominic Vose steps up, he played so well when he came on he turned the game for his team, but his penalty was shocking. A walking ‘run-up’ and a slow side foot straight at the keeper. Kane then finished the game and broke the hearts of the travelling fans and players.
From the comments of the players last night it was easy to see just how much it meant to them and how much losing hurt, but they really gave everything they had, they can be proud of their performance, I know the fans certainly were.
Player Ratings:
David Wooton – 9 – A brilliant Man of the Match performance from the number 2 keeper. He kept us in the game a number of times with outstanding saves and had no chance with any of the penalties.
Dan Potts – 7 – A quieter than usual game from Captain Potts who was being watch by his Dad Steve. Did a good job when moved to centre back.
Jake Young – 7 – The 3 attacking midfielders for Chelsea cause problems for our full backs for a lot of the game but both did well. It was a tough game for our defence and although we let in 3 goals it still seemed like a solid display.
Leo Chambers – 8 – He had a tough game in the last round but he was back to his best for this one. At only 16 he looked excellent on the ball and read the game very well.
Kenzer Lee – 7 – A solid partner for Chambers and looked dangerous bringing the ball forward a few times. Off injured during the move for the Chelsea second goal and hopefully won’t be out long as he’ll be missed judging by tonights performance.
Taylor Miles – 8 - Work very hard in midfield but the 442 formation we had in the first half meant our centre pairing were often overrun. His goal was world class and gave us something to build on in the second half.
Jack Powell – 7 – Put in some great tackles but like Miles struggled with the formation first half, second half was much better for him and he showed the quality we know he has as he kept the game flowing.
Blair Turgott – 8 – Another good performance from the Eastenders loving England man. I was impressed with his work rate and he was often seen tracking back but also trying to create something going forward. He took his goal brilliantly and made us all laugh when he was walking like a wounded chicken after putting in a strong challenge. Good to see a players personality come through on the pitch.
Famino – 6 – Struggled to get into the game in the first half, looked a lot better when Vose came on and they worked well together.
Elliott Lee - 7 - He worked hard chasing everything but he lacked any decent service, first half especially. He had a couple of chances that he failed to take. He did take his goal very well though. Penalty wasn't great but as mentioned it should have been retaken.
Kieran Sadlier - 6 - Quiet game which I think was more down to the formation more than anything, did show some good touches but the substitution changed the game.
Vose – 8 – He changed the game, he kept possession and caused Chelsea loads of problems. His two assists were excellent, he really looked quality. After all that hard work he let himself down with the poor penalty. I hope he picks himself up soon because he is a very useful player.
Hurley – 7 – A straight swap for Miles and he came in and did exactly what was asked, to pick up the tempo and keep control of the game.
Shaw – 7- All three subs came on and looked very good. No happy in just clearing the ball he looked to play it out of defence as often as possible which helped us keep possession.
Linesman – 0 – Should have ordered Lee’s penalty to be retaken as the keeper was so far off his line and he rarely made his own decision all game but waited for the ref to decide before waving his flag. He did take a lot of abuse though

Read elsewhere that that defender of theirs, who ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Hammers contingent, also started shouting at a load of kids, when they had the audacity to sing bubbles!
_______ 'tis true- also shouted " fuck off west ham I hate those cunts.." right in front of me and about half a dozen jester hatted kids.

The beer in the Wheatsheaf and Pigeon was dear £3.70 for Stella, and it did not help the Fat bird who squeezed in a medium England shirt could not add up. £17.40 for 4 pints. Grotty Middlesex.

I sense the linesman may well not have me on his Christmas card list.
Highlights
Two nights on the spin with P & Ronnie
Always good to see Lenny Hatred
Making Steve Potts night by calling him a legend (ok a bit ott but it brought a big smile to his face)
Good laugh with a host of Whoers, a great effort by Exeter travelling up from Bristol and good company as always
Negatives
Although it was an exciting game there was little in the way of quality and I was looking forward to seeing Elliot Lee play who bar the goal wasn't great and took a shocker of a pen

Great report, thanks YR - keep up the good work !
I suitably chastised Mrs BIL-I-AM when I got home for not monitoring the game and realising sausage sandwiches were required during extra time.
Polite is right, I was tempted to go for that ball as it sailed our way, but resisted as I knew I was too short - there's always one though Ron :-)
Good evening - the abuse of the linesman was first class, unlike his performance

Mr P, the girls behind the buffet on the train at that time of the morning, had had a hard day of it.
Suicide on the track, 3 hours added to their day.
My brief summary of events on the pitch at Staines, seemed right up their alley, and just the tonic needed.

Wonderkid, was a good night out mate.
Like going to grounds like that, cracking game of football and met a few off here that I'd not bumped into before.
Could've done without an hour and half train delay at Reading mind, finally rolled in home at gone 3...

To be fair, the system deployed in the first half did not help WHU Youths at all, we were just chasing Chelsea down all the time so we did not see the genuine ball players play at their best in taking the game to Chelsea - I thought Sadlier for one who can score as well as create was badly utilised and that Turgott not sadlier should have gone off for Vose. Another was Fanimo between the two of them they can tear rteams apart but we never got the ball to thitr feet in the first half.
