Anyone live in (or near) to Great Dunmow?
Whats it like these days?

I lived there for a bit about five years ago.

Decent place to settle down/start a family?

Cheers.

Bell I lived in Gt Dunmow from 1977 to 1984. Moved there from Barking and then to Loughton. I know that is a long time back but still go back when in UK. It has changed for the worse . But still infinately better than Barking. My kids went to High Stile and Helena Romanes schools and we were very satisfied with their education. We moved to Loughton to be nearer to job prospects for the kids and but for that reason would have been happy to stay there.

Ah I'm with you Rios, sounded like you couldn't stand the place, which I couldn't understand as SW (IMHO) is an amazing town, so much character and history, reminds me of leafy Hampstead. I've always loved Saffron Waldon and Cambridge outside of London.

Rios, it depends what you want in an area. I think Saffron Walden is a nice town, however if you're under 30 then maybe it'll seem a bit boring. A lot depends on your age and circumstances. Not sure how old you are, I'm 47 with 3 young children, so Dunmow or SW suits me, as I'm not looking to go out every weekend on the piss.

P

100% true mate.

They struggle for news in Saffron Walden but manage to produce 3 (THREE!!) free local WEEKLY newspapers.

Its why many locals call the place "suffer in boredom".

in other news, a shed door was forced open last week and NOTHING was taken. Oh, and the local football team (C'mon you BLOODS!) looks like they will be able to compete next season (if the Ridgeons league will allow them back in).

No certainly hasn't gone downhill. Nice town, very little trouble. Certainly great for bringing up kids, and schools, which was the main reason i moved up here. It's only what 30 minutes from Woodford at the bottom of the M11, and i can be back home from Upton Park in an hour. Great place to live. Nice fresh air, great countryside, low crime rate, and in my opinion not too far away from anywhere. Only downside i guess is a Dunmow train station. Nearest one is Stansted, 10 minutes away, or Stortford.

Yeah I used to like living there. Just wondered if (like a lot of places ) it had gone downhill over the years.

If things work out it could be an ideal commute to work for me and mrs bell.

Yes Bell, also the Dunmow carnival is a great gig in September. I have some mates that play live there, also know the DJ. They can't believe how lovely the people and kids are compared to other carnival's they do in Essex, can't speak highly enough about it. So i guess that says a lot really.

Nik Kershaw does indeed live in Dunmow... next door to me!! Although he's now moved, but still in Dunmow, and i still see him at local events, fire work parties etc.

Dunmow is great really. I moved up here from Buckhurst Hill, mainly for the kids schools. It's certainly not so materialistic and flashy as say Epping, Loughton or Buckhurst Hill, and at first it took some getting used to. It's a kind of mix of Country life and Essex, can be a little chavy if i'm honest, but it's a nice town, and friendly people. Schools are excellent, really nice rounded kids from decent families. Stortford is only 15 minutes down the A120, which is a bit more lively.

I've lived here for around 5 years, wouldn't move back, wife loves it, kids are happy so i guess that's what matters really!

Re: Anyone live in (or near) to Great Dunmow?
P, its about as exciting as Saffron Walden gets.

Half a dozen eggs going missing off somebody's doorsteps a couple of months ago made it to page 5 of the local paper.
