Al Jazeera to bid for new Premier League tv contract?
|
|
Could be according to the boss of ESPN. They show French football at the moment and the Qatar owned channel are thought to be looking to expand ahead of the 2022 World Cup. Would just about top off Murdoch's year for Sky to lose football.

Al Jazeera Sports have basically seen off Canal+ in France for all football coverage in partnership with the French channel M6.
If for whatever reason Al Jazeera Sports want Premier League then I would put money on them getting most of the packages unless Sky pay over the odds, which would not be good news for subscribers.
Unless you have the Sky multi-channel model I struggle to see how the figures would ever add up just for a sport channels but for Al Jazeera it might be a bigger picture that they are seeing if they get Premier League football in the UK.

I would think ESPN are far more worried about this than Sky are.
Sky have the market sown up but very few people actually bother paying for the games on ESPN.
French football isn't on par with the PL and to get punters to pay you have to have more than the football, which Sky have not only the PL but also the FL, CC and CL but also now have F1, all the cricket, almost all the golf, boxing etc etc etc
A stand alone player like Al Jazeera, Setanta before ESPN and now ESPN struggle with it.

Sorry , the article goes on ...
Yet Al Jazeera, the Qatari-owned television channel, is now seen as a serious contender to Rupert Murdoch's prize possession. The bidding for the next set of rights, which will run from August 2013 for three seasons, is expected to start in the spring and the man talking of an Arab bid is Ross Hair, the boss of ESPN in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Hair has a vested interest as he seeks to hold on to his channel's existing package of live matches. We are in his office in Chiswick and, as talk turns to possible rival bidders, Hair says: "An Al Jazeera bid is a realistic prospect. They have done something very interesting in France in buying First Division football against the incumbent satellite broadcaster, Canal Plus, and we've also looked at what they've done in other markets.
"You can draw parallels with the upcoming auction in the UK. Al Jazeera have the ambition to grow further in sport and into other markets."

Funny, I don't read anything in that article that makes me think it is for the UK package.
Reckon it's another case of a journalist hearing one thing and assuming another.

Tanner, This was the original article in the Evening Standard. The ESPN bloke seems to be talking about UK rights not the overseas package.
Al Jazeera could be a sensational new bidder to show Premier League football, according to ESPN boss Ross Hair.
The current three-season TV deal which saw Sky and ESPN pay a total of £1.78billion to screen 138 top-flight live games per year ends in May 2013.
The fight for the next three-year contract is due to start in the spring and will be tougher than ever with the Qatar-owned TV channel said to be weighing up a move. Al Jazeera has already entered the French market. It screens Ligue 1 games and from next season it will also show the majority of Champions League matches on TV in France.
Hair now believes Al Jazeera has its sights set on the Premier League - a move which could threaten Sky's dominance of the TV rights.
In his first interview since taking over as head of ESPN for Europe, Middle East and Africa last November, Hair told Standard Sport: "We're expecting another Premier League auction in April or May. An Al Jazeera bid is a realistic prospect.

This isn't a bid against Sky, it will be for the PL rights in the Middle East.
Currently every PL game is shown live in HD by ADTV (Abu Dhabi) in the Middle East.

Just won't happen. The PL has been made by Sky and they hold a good deal of sway BUT if it did happen it would be bad for sport on TV in general in this country.
Still you can't have all the PL packages on one channel so I guess they would take the ESPN package.
Who in their right mind is going to outbid Sky with fuck all else to offer in this day now the pub landlady won her high court case and you can watch the football online?

Al Jazeera IMO is a good Channel as I have a language button on the remote that you can listen to games with about 5 / 6 different languages.
Even if the HT pundits are Arabic with english subtitles totally unbiased.
Oh and they also show a lot of Championship games not that I am biased you understand.!

You don't want to get into a bidding war with Qatari's if they decide they want it at any price.

SKY's whole raison detre is based on having the football, if they lost that it would be curtains for their coverage of most other sports
