Keeping the name of the band when you really shouldn't
Listened to an entertaining interview with Peter Hook on 6Records this week in which Hook - who came across as a nicer bloke than I'd probably thought he might be - stated his reasons why New Order shouldn't tour under that name without him. Seems the dispute is over whether or not Hook left the band or or if they broke up and re-formed without him.

Sometimes it just 'feels' OK and others not. For example, I always felt Fleetwood Mac weren't Mac once Peter Green left even though the band was named after two members who stayed in. .I'd have to say I'm not sure New Order are NO without Hook.

Anyone seen any bands where the main protaganist was missing?

Supertramp just ain't Supertramp without Roger Hodgson.

Listen to some of his songs being sung by the new band and you will hear what I mean.

As much as I loved them, couldn't bring myself to see Big Country on their recent tour. Going to see Dexy's and The Waterboys soon, both bands being, basically, the singer/songwriter.

See I can't see that. Surely Kevin Rowland can call any band Dexy's Midnight Runners and they just are? (even if he has stolen the others' ideas)

Guns N Roses, Axl Rose should have packed it in 20 years ago.

Thanks for that - I wasn't 100% sure what the connection had been.

It's a very very long story re: SPK and a lot depends upon which version of SPK history you believe. There may or may not have been an ancillary member of SPK recruited in 1978 from within the Sydney mental hospital where Graeme (The Operator/ Oblivion/ EMS AKS) and Neil (Ne/H/il and I forget his other aliases) met, who might very well have topped himself (stage name possibly "Vostro", a bass player who occasionally stood in for David Virgin in the earliest days)

When Graeme moved to the UK he claimed that Neil had topped himself- or rather that someone had and everyone assumed he meant Neil. (This from Nigel Ayers (Nocturnal Emissions) who is a mate of mine and back then collaborated with SPK) Then about the time that their first album came out (recorded in London), another form of SPK down in Sydney issued a single (Neil Hill, his wife and a couple of friends).

Note that early SPK music on youtube seems to perpetuate the Ne/H/il 1979 suicide myth.

Anyway, both SPKs re-merged for Leichenschrei after which things started to fall apart. Neil's missus was taken into hospital with complications from annorexia; Neil topped himself a couple of days before his wife finally died. This was in early 1984. Graeme fell out with Dom Guerrin (Tone Generator) - and not just about the direction of the band, I understand. The bassist who eventually became Hoodlum Priest left SPK and briefly joined the Cure.

Re: Metal Dance I understand that Graeme wasn't sure how it would be received. Nigel Ayers has claimed to me that he was the first person outside the studio to hear it. And he said he really liked it first time he heard it.

I think it probably falls into the category of songs which are quite catchy when first heard, but which have aged particularly badly (unlike much of the earlier SPK work which hasn't)

Didn't ELP get through a few "P's"?

If they could have only gotten through a few "E's" & "L's" at the same time they may have made something of themselves.

.................... And it was absolutely brilliant.

Set list was limited to their first 5 albums - so nothing from waterfront / sparkle in the rain onwards.

Opened with I-Travel (as opposed to I-Ron - closest i could get to a WHO related song title - although the re-worked Promised Hugh a Miracle where the lyrics have been changed to recount a WHO promise not to post abuse on a Hugh Monnteith thread ran it close) and played for 2.5 hours - I've seen. These fellas loads of times and tonight was the best ever. Being at the roundhouse helped as well - cracking venue.

He apparently phoned up Genesis P-Orridge just before hanging himself & sang the TG track "Weeping" down the phone to him. Genesis somehow sensed that something was very wrong (everyone had been worried for a while I think) and asked if someone living nearer to Curtis could go round and check on him, they didn't get there in time though.

Think I read that in an interview with Genesis after he decided he was transgender.

I thought a couple of SPK topped themselves

was listening to a radio one show and they was meant to do a gig but the fire brigade shut them down after one song

I heard metal dance when i walked into penny farthing records and bought it on the spot

heard nothing else from them after that

Agree. When Rodgers got involved they should have become Freen or Bad Queen.

Dexys Midnight Runners kept the full name for years, even after Archer left. Think they are just Dexys now though, playing Shepherds Bush soon as well.

Guns 'n' Roses are playing at the 02 in a few months if people want to see what this threads all about in action.
