Excellent programme I thought… I think old Paxman is generally gutted when he speaks to the Indians etc that won’t bad mouth the good old days and honestly believe that the empire has benifited them… India did NOT seem the place to go…. Toss of a coin whether disease got you or not…. How many Jocks in Canada… that bloody town (Fraser?) is more Scottish than the whole of Scotland put together….

The shifting of cheap 'labour' from one continent to another in order to build infrastructure projects to spread the empire was seen as a smart move at the time without consequences.
It all came home to roost when countries like Kenya became independent and wanted all the 'non' indigenous populations on their bikes.
Where did that cheap labour go - Britain. People complaining about the state of the nation today really are just paying the toll of empire building.
Still, you do have the best curry houses.
