Sam - do something about our home form!
|
|
Surely against Watford we can play more entertainingly and get our home supporters behind us - which we need to improve our shocking home form.

As long as hoof he allows/instructs hoof our defenders hoof to hoof the ball hoof up to our hoof front two, bypassing hoof the midfield hoof we will be crap.

Watford didn't have much ambition but were very poorly organised and weren't the hardest team to break down. We turned their defence a couple of times in the first few minutes then just stopped playing. Faubert gave us no width on the right - he couldn't even stand in the right place. The aimless hoofing was depressing and bizarrely we only started passing in injury time. The most worrying thing was the lack of movement and creativity. Results mask poor performances but we didn't get one tonight. Sam needs a plan B - and that might even involve pass and move.....

Teams that come to the Boleyn basically play their game of the season just to park the bus and come away with a point.
I'm no analyst of the game but they don't seem to fare that well in the games after they come to us.
Just a thought like...

You're not comparing Wenger and Sam are you? :)
I get the argument you make, i don't particularly agree but i get it. I just think the mentality could easily change even if the style doesn't and I can only see it affecting the results in a positive way - and certainly the atmosphere

I don't disagree, mate, but I'll temper that with what El Scorchio said at 2.51.
I think Sam will try to build the squad in a way that allows more exciting attcking play but first things first, and that is to have a solid hard bastard of a team that is indeed difficult to beat, then we can build on that after. All the best teams are built on a strong defensive foundtion. Wenger's gooners, for example, could only have done what they did with George Graham's defensive legacy already in place. He's never really replaced Adams and co with anything near as reliable.

I think people are confusing 'form' (i.e. results) with 'performances'.
Nothing wrong with the form whatsoever. You could argue that the performances could be better. They are still far from 'shocking' though.
Still. The remit given to the manager will have been 'get us promoted by any means' whether we (the fans) like it or not. Therefore results are more important IN THE EYES OF THOSE RUNNING THE CLUB than playing expansive football. I understand that, so I'm not going to nitpick about performances, becaues it's not the club's priority this season.
We're on course to be automatically promoted at the moment, so the manager is doing his job in the eyes of the people he ultimately has to answer to. (his employees)
For sure there's room for improvement in some of the performances, but I don't think anyone should be moaning about our form (i.e. results) when you look at the team's body of work over the course of the season so far.

I don't think anyone is expecting to walk over every team all the time.... well some idiots probably are but most realise that just doesn't happen.
I think this thread is more about the mentality of the team especially at home games and that mentality has been to set up not to lose rather than go for the win.
Of course it can be argued that it has been sucessful as we have a very good defencive record and are second in the league.
It'd be nice to see the mentality change to one of going out and trying to win rather than just not to lose though don't you think?

Weird thing is, the game where we did look like going for it was against one of the better teams in Southampton.
It isn't so much the formation as we played 451/433 against them but it was the mentality that the team had that made it look good....and the crowd responded to it.
With that attacking mentality it doesn't matter too much if a player makes a mistake because although the crowd groan there is something else to get excited about soon after so it's forgotten.
Problem with having a don't lose mentality is that when we do have a rare attack and a mistake is made that groan turns into a moan and frustration takes over and the crowd seem to be on the players backs which in turn doesn't give them freedom and makes them more nervous and more prone to mistakes... a vicious circle if you will.
We can be the best crowd in the world...but we can also be the worst. To get the best out of us we need to see that attacking mentality. Rarely will you see a good atmosphere when we put in a defencive performance especially when it's against teams like we have played this season.

Mr P
Perhaps we do have the best squad in this division, even though Saints have a better team as they've played together for a few years with incredibly few injuries.
Best squad, however, doesn't always guarantee wins. We have turned Man U over on a fair few occasions, even though their squad has been light years ahead of ours for decades, becasue we upped our game so much because they were the scalp to claim, as we are now.
There are no givens for us in this division. No walk overs. Reality is not as simple and lineal as some fans' thinking.

True Mr P, and I wasn't digging Curbs out (or bigging Sam up).
I want to see Maynard and Baldock paired togethre in a 4-4-fucking 2, especially against Watfiord and Doncaster - we should go for their throats and smash them even if it ends up 6-3 or something.
My front 6 would be:
Vaz Te Noble Nolan Taylor Baldock Maynard
(Yes, yes I know there are some doubts about Nolan in a midfiled 2, but still.....)

I don't disagree Joker.
Big difference now is that we are the best team in the league so there is no reason why we shouldn't be taking teams apart from time to time. Certainly going out with a mentality of trying to win rather than trying not to lose.
Curbs, Grant and Zola as much as people can dig them out for all sorts were playing much MUCH better teams than we are at the moment.

True, we are the best team in the league. At home it would be nice to show confidence and go all out for a win.
