westcliff- That bloke's comments are a bit strong!
The saddest thing is, particularly for the families, is that a lot join up because there are very few other jobs for them.
In a way, I can understand why young men and women join up out of choice but, on the other hand, a lot of them are signing their own death warrant, unfortunately.
RIP to all and a sad, sad situation.

"Six British soldiers killed in southern Afghanistan by a Taliban bomb have been named by the Ministry of Defence.
Cpl Jake Hartley, 20, Pte Anthony Frampton, 20, and Pte Christopher Kershaw, 19, died in the blast.
Pte Daniel Wade, 20, Pte Daniel Wilford, 21, and Sgt Nigel Coupe, 33, were also killed when their Warrior armoured vehicle was hit on Tuesday."
RIP. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

I always thought we were there to prevent Al Qaeda from using the place as a base for training and to launch attacks against the west. The destruction of the Taliban was never a goal in itself. Nor was imposing our version of civilisation. As soon as Al Qaeda are finished we'll be out of there, the Taliban will be back and they'll all be left to sort it out amongst themselves

Northern, I believe the original excuse was to secure a pipeline route east away from the Arabian/Caspian oilfields.
Industrial demands (i.e every cunt and his brother that absolutely MUST have an iPhone/iPaD) have altered the economic criteria - but it's still all about securing resources for the west to exploit.

Sold Oil fields are currently being discovered there and there is a massive search being conducted presently.
A quick google could give you the details you need.

Iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe. NY Times June 2011
OK could be a smokescreen to justify going in as The World Police but not as stupid as it sounds.
If true a LOT of money to be made potentially so thus the interest.
I also receive various Fund Management Groups reports ( Not American ) who say exactly the same.
Qatar was bankrupt 20 odd years ago found Gas Deposits and look where they are now.

Northern, I believe that there are a lot of the "Rare Earth" type minerals there - the stuff that China currently clears up in. None of those = no modern technology.

Get the western forces out - NOW.
If the Chinese & Indians want to steam in after the minerals, fucking let them - means they'll place less demand on what the west currently has access to, and THEY can deal with the Taliban in their own way.

Sad very sad indeed.
Should not have been there in the first place but having committed ourselves pulling out now will make the loss of these six guys worthless.
R.I.P to the six and condolences to their families.
As said by others to many making money out of this while poor guys like this pay the consequences.
