beer duty escalator

Beer tax has increased by 35% since 2008 and another 5% is on the cards. As a beer drinker I don't think this is acceptable.
If you love pubs and drinking beer then sign up to these and make your feelings known before the budget on 21st March.
Even if the w*ankers in charge do increase the price of beer again you have had the chance to let your feelings be known to the treasury and your MP.

I stand corrected, a bit of research shows that the 20-a-day smoker will have paid enough in tax/duty to cover their costs after 20 years.

I would also like to point out, the figures I referred to for alchohol and excise duty are the figures for those duties ONLY. It excludes VAT on the duty and VAT on the actual product. So the total tax take on alchohol and tobacco, is vastly greater than the figures I referred to.
Let alone all the corporation tax paid by the breweries and tobacco companies.

Do you seriously believe that over a life time a smoker on say 20 a day will pay enough in tax to cover all their healthcare costs?

V for vendetta - you think that a bit of tax on fags and beer pays for the cost of dealing with the health issues involved with them?
you probably pay 40% of your wages in tax - or something like that - would you be happy paying a lot more?

No I think smokers and drinkers should pay their health cost. They do and even more so out of the tax on tobacco and alcohol, something you keep conveniently forgetting.

As you say things change and there are far too many pubs these days for the people that want to go in them.
What happens is the good pubs with survive and thrive and the shit ones will go to the wall.

Ok I will pay for the abuse of myself that's fine - but hey ho fuck you I am not paying the portion of your unemployment benefit / pension that you or anyone else in the country will receive is that ok?
Your system works if only we can all be selfish - ie I pay fuck all towards the social system for anyone else.
I am fine with this!

True, but I'd doubt that outweighs the cost of the treatment.
Just charge people for treatment that is needed as a result of long term abuse.

Scud - smoking reduces life expectancy by 10 years or so.
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Smoking-The-Facts.htm
So that's 10 years of smokers not collecting the universal, non means tested state pension. That's quite a saving.

It's going to take more than a tax freeze to sort the problem of closing pubs.
It's supermarket prices, greedy pubco's, cultual changes, smoking ban. The govt will say they have frozen/reduced tax on beers under 2.4% but who drinks those or wants to or knows where to buy them. This should be increased to 3.5% at the very least.
Whoever said we are a nation of beer drinkers, brewers and pubs is correct and the govt not supporting this industry is madness.
Proper off licences should be bought back and properly licencsed. I don't agree with restricted opening times but any old c£nt can sell booze now and I think this has affected pubs. If beer was cheaper in pubs more people would go. A well run pub is a community asset and a lot more fun than sitting round someones house drinking beer from a supermarket.

Do you honestly believe that it's ok for people to spend a life time fucking themselves up and then expect society to foot the bill for sorting them out. As I said before I doubt the tax they pay on the indulgences covers the treatment.
Live is about making choices and living with the consequences not expecting everyone else to bail you out.

V for Vendetta. Alchohol and tobacco duties cover about 1/6th of the cost of the NHS.
NHS cost £124 billion, http://www.ukpublicspending.co.uk/total_spending_2012UKbn
Alchohol and tobacco duties £19 billion.
http://www.ifs.org.uk/bns/bn09.pdf
Does it cost them 1/6th of their budget? Well in 2009 smoking illnesses cost the NHS £5 billion
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8086142.stm
Drinkers cost £2.7 billion in 2006/07 (most recent study)
http://www.ic.nhs.uk/webfiles/publications/003_Health_Lifestyles/Alcohol_2011/NHSIC_Statistics_on_Alcohol_England_2011.pdf
So even allowing for inflation, I'd say smokers and drinkers are net contributors, by a long way.

It's already been established on this thread that the taxes on drinking and smoking don't cover the NHS cost.
Incorrect, I've provided evidence on this thread that the tax from drinking and smoking provides a third of the entire cost of the NHS, keep deluding yourself though, it makes you look far stupid than admitting you are wrong.
