Might be the best game I have seen Nolan in a West Ham shirt.
He chased and harried all over the pitch, put some decent crosses in and scored a goal.
Just hope he can keep that going.

Sir Alf 9:37 Thu Apr 5 Agree that Cole is better running at players rather than his back to goal.

You may be onto something. Not sure about Taylor but I am certain we woudl do better to play Nolan further forward alongside another striker. I think that is what Hughton did in that promotion year for the Bar Codes?
Then again, I have always had this theory that CFC might be better played wider but he has always been the one to keep the central striker birth while everyone else is played out of position to accomodate him. It has been the same under Zola, Grant & BFS. Ok, it might be disasterous but honestly I dont think he has what it takes to lead the strikeforce and running with the ball from wide positions might be more effective. Worth a try but will never happen. That is my desperate, clutching at straws, maybe madcap idea for the day.
Back to what you were saying. yes we did look more balanced as a team in midfield without Nolan in the side. Would it have continued ? We wil never know :-(

Why is it that when both Nolan and Taylor were suspended we played decent football? I think we will miss Noble tomorrow. As for BFS saying that when Tomkins was moved to midfield that has worked before. The only time it has worked before is, in my opinion, because we were down to 10 men and neither Nolan or Taylor were there to disrupt it.

I knew he was slow but are we saying he is so slow that he is suspended in a time warp and still making his way back to get goal side of that geezer who had a free header for the equaliser last Saturday ?

correct. any player would score nolan s' goals(probably more in fact) given that he has the freedom of the pitch. nolan has been our best captain since lucas neil although in fairness any life form would be better than matthew upson.

Some interesting stats....
Kevin Nolan 35 league starts 9 goals from playing effectively a free role behind the striker week in week out aganist poor defences. Other midfielders who have scored more than 10 goals this season in the champ (in arguably worse teams)...
Snodgrass - leeds (13) Whittingham - cardiff (11) Burke - birmingham (10) Koren - hull (10) Lallana - southampton (10) Vaz Te - barnsley/WH (14)
And many more average midfielder have score between 7-10 league goals this season. So hardly prolific in that sense.
35 league starts - 2 assists.
And Sam wonders why we can't score goals. Probably because we have a waste of space taking up the most creative position on the pitch for 90 mins week in week out.

13 Brentford Rd 12:30 Mon Apr 2 'Why do idiots keep digging Noble out? He's had an excellent season & is one of the only players who cares & plays with real passion & commitent!'
I'm one of those 'idiots'. I think Noble is a complete liability. The traits that you mention are all very well and good but that is not enough. He lacks speed, thought & skill.
Losing the ball on the edge of our area a few minutes before half time was stupid and I can fully understand why one of his team mates allegedly pointed the finger at him for giving our lead away.
I would love all of our home produced players to do well but Noble is over-rated because of the traits you mention. He keeps attempting the Parker turn and he simply hasn't got the skill and often loses possession.
One of his common errors is retreating back to get a short pass from the defender, only for him to play another short pass that the defender could have played. We move forward and stop. Why? because Noble has left a hole in midfield when he went back. It slows down most of our attacks and results in sidewards & backwards passes.
His last few games have been very bad.
I suggest you take off the blinkers and watch him closely.
We've been very bad for a few seasons and those seasons all include Noble, Cole, Faubert and Collison. I'd ship them out. Yes anyone of them can have the occassional good game but none of them are good enough. Neither is our manager unfortunately.

It's a good question mongo. Not sure I have an answer because I don't think Lansbury has shone in any of the roles we've played him in. I think he'll end up a wide player who cuts inside. A Benayoun type.

Nolan in the Sun
“When teams play us there’s a totally different mental attitude than when they play Southampton or Reading. Southampton have just come up, they’re not the big guns, but WE have had to deal with that all season. Our sloppy defending cost us, but the referees and assistants were poor, that’s been the case for the last few weeks”

Sniper - I don't believe he did. I think a couple of the performances were masked behind us going down to 10 men and maybe looking better than they actually were.
For me, he's looked uncomfortable since he first played it against Millwall. If it's that much of a problem, instead of buying 600 strikers and not using them, he should have gone looking for a defensive midfielder. It was surely clear to everyone that 85 yr old Diop was not going to play that many games.
