npower CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY 5 APRIL 2012 KICK-OFF: 5:15 PM
• West Ham United go into Good Friday's match at Barnsley looking to set a new club record of 12 away wins in a season having equalled the record in their last away game at Peterborough. • The Hammers will be looking to bounce back from defeat to Reading in their last game; their first at home since the beginning of December. The result sees West Ham sitting in third place in the npower Championship. • Barnsley entertain the Hammers having lost 1-0 away to Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon. It was the Tykes' fifth loss in their last six games and leaves them in 18th place in the npower championship - just four places above the relegation zone. • The visit to Barnsley will be Ricardo Vaz Te's first visit back to Oakwell since he moved to the Hammers in January. • The match will be shown live on BBC One. Coverage starts at 5:00pm.
Team News West Ham United • West Ham United could be without the services of Mark Noble, who came off at half-time against Reading, and Joey O'Brien who didn't make the game. • A trio of players could make their return for the Hammers after a spell on the sidelines. Papa Bouba Diop, Guy Demel and Winston Reid all played in a behind closed doors match with QPR and could feature on Friday. Barnsley • Barnsley will be unable to call upon Frank Nouble as he is on loan from West Ham United. • Barnsley have no new injury concerns but are still without seven first team players who have long-term injuries. • Midfielder Nathan Doyle sits out the second game of his three match ban and goalkeeper David Button will continue in the absence of Luke Steele out with a stomach problem.
Referee • Friday evening's referee will be Mr. Tony Bates. • Bates is the longest-serving referee in the Football League. Aged 50, he has been officiating in the Football League since being appointed as an assistant referee as long ago as 1993, having begun his career a decade earlier at junior level.

Re McCarthy, that wasn't what he was saying at all. In context..
"Keith Hill's got a team, who he's got from the lower leagues. You wouldn't swap.. I wouldn't swap, one of West Ham's players for the Barnsley players. West Ham should come here and win, and they've done a really professional job, it was a good performance today, and they took Barnsley apart. The players they have on show, they should do."
Same with his comments about our home form, if I remember it right (I'll watch it again later) he was just saying what people on here have been saying all season, ie you can't do what you do at away matches when you're at home, and expect it to work.
I half thought he was auditioning for the job.

Still think our home form could fuck us, but if we start against the Brummies like we did against Reading we'll be ok. The only team I've seen less up for a fight at the Boleyn than Barnsley were today were Doncaster, but as soon as we scored we took our foot off the gas instead of going for their throats.

I've just got home and haven't looked through the whole thread.
Perhaps McCarthy had his Barnsley blinkers on, he did once play for them, I guess.
The biggest laugh of the day was when Barnsley announced that Stephen Foster was Man of the Match... cue 'There's only one Stephen Foster' from the away support!

Yep Barnsley were shut but they made life much harder for us at up (albeit with one of our now better players in their side). We have to learn to maintain pressure on teams, hold them by the throat until they break down. Dare I say it - like man u have been able to do for years.

Couldn't agree more based on today. Don't know what McCarthy was on (usually rate his opinions as well) but honestly, if they play anything like that in their remaining games, they're more than capable of going down. That was fucking non-league standard they put out against us for most of the 90 today.

I thought we eased off considerably once we were two up, but Barnsley were so hapless that they couldn't take advantage.
If you want an outside bet for relegation, I don't think you have to look much further.

We did what we have been crying out for - played it on the floor. What I also liked was the way we harried and pressed when they had the ball.
A good all round performance. I just hope we can repeat it on Monday, although, at the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, it will be a much harder match.

Sven-- you are correct. I also noticed McCarthy repeated more than once that West Ham can't seem to reproduce their away form at Upton Park when they have to break down packed defences and leave themselves open to breakaway attacks. We all know that, but McCarthy seemed to delight in pointing out this weakness in Allardyce's home tactics. I don't think the cunt likes us!

Cheers Eric. McCarthy said it after praising the Barnsley manager & the effort he was getting from a lot of players who are from lower league clubs. It just seemed an odd thing to say about a team beaten 4-0. I'm taking it as an omen. He was equally derogatory before the Swindon game as an itv pundit when we beat Cambridge and got promoted a week later 20 years ago. Not that I hold a grudge at all !

Gavros --my memory says McCarthy said ' I wouldn't swap ANY of the Barnsley players for West Ham players'. I noticed Brooking looked bemused when he heard the comment.

Mcarthy hit the nail on the head when he said he wouldn't swap all of Barnsleys team for one west ham player. We were miles better than them, as we should be. We should be doing that sort of thing far more often too. allardyce has to work out how to win and win convincingly at home. We have the team to do it, we just don't have the strategy and tactics yet.

Good performance from WHU today, very pleased with the result and how we actually took our chances for once.
By christ though, I don't think I've EVER seen a side at this level so abject as Barnsley were today. Thing is, we did make errors, we did have weaknesses and mental fragility and all the rest from recent games, and it occasionally showed through (though we obviously improved vastly on, say, the Reading or Crystal Palace performances). They just looked like a side from two or three divisions below us for most of it, which really helped. I was genuinely a bit shocked to see how shit they were.

Bleeding claret and Texas-- I believe Sven Roeder was right about what McCarthy meant about not wanting any of the Barnsley players replaced by West Ham players. It was a crackpot statement to make, and I think his recent sacking is affecting his brain cells.
