George McCartney - Our best full back of the last 10 years?
If not the best then surely he's been the most consistent. He, along with Neill, Zamora and Tevez was the main reason we pulled off the Great Escape in 2007. The following year he was runner up HOTY and on his return this season he's been one of our most consistent performers.

All the other contenders have been very hit and miss:

Schemmel - Labelled "phenomenally unstable" by the president of his previous club, Schemmel was named HOTY in his first full season with us, followed by dire performances from then on.

Illunga - another good first season whilst on loan and one which alleviated initial concerns about McCartney's sale. Went pear shaped almost as soon as the move became permanent and soon became enough of a liability on the pitch that he was even dropped from the 25 man squad last January.

Lucas Neill - Made a great start to his WHU career and one of the main reasons we stayed up in 2007. 2nd season syndrome kicked in again with a massive drop in form, which he blamed on the responsibilities of being the club captain. Made a return to form the following year before leaving on a free transfer.

Tomas Repka - some very hit and miss performances as centre back in his first 2 years at the club but became a very reliable right back after our relegation in 2003. I expect some would argue that he's been our best full back in this period rather than McCartney .

I'm not going to say anything about the other full backs of the last 10 years as most either had only a short time with us (Glen Johnson, Wayne Bridge, Lars Jacobsen, Rufus Brevett, Wayne Quinn) or are still with us (and I don't think anyone would argue that Faubert, O'Brien or Demel have matched McCartney's form this season)

Last ten years? You may be right, you may not be but the thing is with McCartney is that he IS a full-back and West Ham have been playing without for so long we all get excited when one appears and does his normal job. Every season I point out that WHU 's best seasons have always been when we've had TWO recognised proper full-backs. (Don't take my word for it - look!). I simply don't understand why succesive Managers play without them. Look what happened with Roeder when he had an in-form Schemmel. What happened the season after? Why did we nearly escape relegation when he brought in the virtually unknown Johnson? Konchesky - Pardew in the 2006 season? Curbishley brought off the miracle when he bought in Neill (after getting further in the mire by outing Konchesky) Whatever happens this season we must get in, or play with, two proper defensive full-backs.

He really annoyed me in the first half of the season, he has got much better though, especially since his goal at Cardiff.

Defensively he is sound, which would be enough for the PL, but in this league he is too slow at getting forward and getting a cross in, which is what we should be doing against lesser opposition.

I'd have no problem in having McCartney and O'Brien still here next year.

I just hope they are both back ups to quality fullbacks.

Anyone who saw McCartney yesterday will see he is far from what we need. Slow, dithering poor Championship player. Thanks George hope not to see you next season.

We've had two alcoholic right-backs this millenium already: Gary Charles and Sebastien Schemmel.

That combined with an alcoholic goalkeeper, Roy Carroll, managed by an alcoholic manager, Alan Curbishley.

Always liked McCartney. He's a top quality left back and wouldn't look out of place in any team in the Prem.

I would say he is our best full back in the last 10 years. I liked Lucas Neill too.

Re: George McCartney - Our best full back of the last 10 years?
We haven't had a decent full back since Glen Johnson

McCartney has been the most consistent since, by a mile, but he does lack a bit of pace

Nobody has been brilliant at RB for a very long time. A weakness that has never been addressed properly for years!

yep...inconsistent as a defender ...My Opinion...

Very good going forward...and also poor at whipping Lav Seats...

>>> Johnson looked immediate quality...and was snapped up...inconsistent since he left...

An £18m full back, 35 England caps, currently linked with Real Madrid = inconsistent :)

George teamed up well with Ethers.

Neill was a slow fouler as was Repka.

He hasn't even been the best left back this season.

No wonder Curbishley was so fucked off when they sold him on.

He could still do a job in the prem as well I reckon!
