Songs that give you goosebumps
Sitting here, bemoaning my fate and my miserable life, lack of success and the fact that, by a cruel twist of fate, I support a team that continue to aggrevate and frustrate and suddenly Nick Drake's 'Northern Sky' comes on 6records. Whack up volume, shiver, goosebumps, hairs on back of neck go up - even though I've heard it a thousand times before and I can play it any time I like 'cos it's in my collection downstairs. Suddenly, the sun is shining through the window, I have my health, the kids are doing well and we're going to go up regardless.

Any record done that to you recently or does music leave you unmoved?

Agreed. Also, by a sheer coincidence I was lsitening to part of the 'Titanic Live' thing on Radio2 (I hadn't intended to listen) which was better and more moving than I thought it would be. They were chatting to a singer on there whose name I missed and he said he was going to sing one of Springteen's songs - bugger, can't rememeber the title now which was the whole point of me writing, will look it up on the R2 site - and he, and by now I realised it was Carrack, sung this beautiful, haunting song just after they had discussed how, at this point 100 years ago, steerage passangers were coming up onto the deck and finding there were no boats for them. That voice is still intact. You're right about, Chris and Glenn's (not Waddle & Hoddle) voices though and I actually don't like the Carrack-led version of 'Tempted' that they re-cut for a film.

Re: Tempted - funnily enough me and a bloke I worked with then ended up singing in on a table in a wine bar one drunken Friday night and THAT'S my feelings for that song. I don't do this type of thing but - if push came to shove - it would probably be my karaoke song

I think 'Some Fantastic Place' is one of the most poingiant songs ever written. I didnt know that it was written about a good friend of the writer who suffered a very early death until a couple of years after i first heard it. One of those that can produce a tear depending on my mood.

Actually my first thought was to post 'Tempted' but that only had an effect on me, goosebump and full lump in throat/tears wise, in the immediate aftermath of a failed relationship; listening to it in the comfort of a stable and fantastic relationship it really doesn't have the same effect, whereas the other songs go beyond that - everyone has the fear inside them of both their existing relationship going bad and the inevitable loss of a loved one, both of which are almost certainly going to be out of your control, while temptation is most definitely something you can resist if you want to.
So I guess that it isn't just the singer or the song but the combination with the individual listening to it that will lead to the emotion. There are some songs on this thread that leave me stone cold, and others that hit the spot every time, regardless of how I am feeling beforehand, but given the right circumstances all of them will effect you. That is what is so great about music, as it evokes emotions and memories that have often been buried. Hearing 'Bubbles' today as we bashed Brighton has made me all emotional too!

You don't mention Carrack in his Squeeze period. His vocals on the 'Some Fantastic Place' album are superb and if you haven't heard 'Loving You Tonight' then I suggest you do.
