Moving to the USA in 2 weeks
And I got to shed anopthe 90sq ft of stuff to fit in the 20ft container

How do you deicde what you won't need for your new life across the pond?

- the porn stash has to come
- and so does the wifes shoe collection
- so do I leave my record collection behind
or
- should I leave furniture? (seems a pain - coz I only have to buy more once I get out there!)

anyone else emigrated and been thru this shit?

Claret Badger 4:25 Fri Apr 13 Relocated for job reasons... More money...better prospects... There are many more Oil related jobs in Texas than California... Also...Got more house and lower overall cost of living in Texas...and NO State Income tax in Texas...

In California it's pretty high...and in addition to Federal Tax...

California is a great place to live...climate...geography...things to do...places to vist etc.....but it's very expensive...and most metropolitan area house prices are the highest in US...

Good luck...

Do the research first...

CB> one thing you might find odd (I still do) is the attitude to gun ownership.

I was chatting to a bloke in my local last night who owns three guns. Whenever he travels to a state that allows "concealed" weapons to be carried, he takes a gun with him. I asked him why, and he replied "it makes me feel safer" , safer from what I don't know, but it makes him feel safer. I suspect he just likes carrying a gun around.

Now it's aboslutely his right to do so, by law, but I still find it a bit weird.

It varies by state, New York and Illinois have fairly strict rules, but Texas doesn't require any licensing or registration - so you best get tooled up ;)

They don't know what full stops are - so he should get away with it.

Re: Moving to the USA in 2 weeks
It is an amazing country. Be aware that mattresses and bed stuff is way more expensive here for some reason.

Electricals are cheaper.

WHen I moved over in 1978..

Wife..One Kid...3 Suitcases each...one carry on each...That was it...

Rented out the UK house Furnished...sold it later when we bought in USA...

But not much furniture & Fittings left as the last tennant did a moonlight with all our furniture...which wasn't worth much anyway...

Bought everything after we arrived...in California...

Moved to Texas in 1985...

Never looked back...

But it was a different country then...

Good luck in North Texas...

You won't need the Wardrobes/Armoires..unless you get a really old hous(over 60 years old..as they mostly have large walkin closets...the size of a small UK bedroom usually...and many times his & hers in the master bedroom..and one at least in each of the other rooms...

No point taking just a mattress..as the bed sizes are different here...and you & the missus won't go smaller than a Queen size or King...

If you also take the bed...Headboard Footboard & frame/rails then take the mattress...

Hopefully your table and bookcases are quality and not IKEA type,,as it's cheaper to buythose ..

If quality antiques etc...worth bringing...

Rel Lether Chesterfieldds would be worth bringing...

No tax I believe unless you declare them to be an absurd amount...as if they were really fine antiques...just read the rules &financial limits...

You do realise the electrics are 110 Vols in USA...so make sure your Hi Fi etc will work or you'll need transformers...

Nothing wrong with Target...Walmart...for basics at good prices...
Costco is the place for family shopping at Warehouse prices...don't join SAMS unless no Costco...Everything from Food to Furnitur...Electronics...Computers...etc etc...go check their website..www.costco.com...and great prices..

You do realise Whole Foods is only food & related...

I rarely go there as HEB has its own equivalent...Central Market...just as good..and much more variety and better prices...

Any other advice please WHO Mail me...

PS...You will need a Region Free DVD player if you are bringing UK bought DVD's...

Good Luck...

Make sure you get an internet deal with at least 7mbps.

That way you can get this :

http://www.uktveverywhere.com/

and not have to watch the crap they have on over here. Occasionally, you see some fellas on claret and blue playing too.
