If we go up he is one we can rely on to be up to it next season. If we dont go up he will probably end up somewhere else.
I like Sir Alfs comments on this thread.

That's the first time I've seen any of him today, and I have to say I was very impressed.
Brighton were really, REALLY shit, and we probably should have scored 10....but Vaz Te was absolute quality.

Chim, I'm with you. When he left the Doncaster game with an injury we were lost. It's a little worrying that our creative flair is so concentrated around this one player, but it's a start. As soon as he gets the ball, he turns for the opposition's goal. I like him and at a fee of only £500,000, you can't complain.
Wonderful haircut too.

Fuck all this 'cautiously optimistic' stuff (as much as I'd normally totally agree Sir Alf), when Vaz Te picks up the ball and heads towards the opposition goal I get excited, a feeling I've not felt since Ashton, Bellamy and sometimes Ba.
That's a pretty exclusive club he's gatecrashing and keeping him fit is absolutely paramount to our Premiership ambitions.
He got kicked, pulled back and double-marked today and came out with the ball more often than not. A little turn here, a dummy there and if all else failed he simply went through players.
I was underwhelmed (neutral at best anyway) too when news came in that he'd signed- I thought it would be Maynard who'd shine, like a lot of people. Maybe he still will.
We're blessed to have him.

yes, he managed to do well from out wide but in the free roaming role today he caused Brighton all sorts of problems. His finishing was excellent but also his movement and ability to go past a man. We need a few more of those and it was noticeable how we reverted to a more functional game once he left the field. That said, Brighton were just playing out the game at that point and we even got one more goal.
I still think we need to get more mobility for midfield whatever Division we are in next season. Its been an obsession of mine for a while. Its not the only deficiency but the one that pops up as a problem most. Even today after the first 10 minutes our midfield 3 struggled to get possession. At home we need more collective mobility. Individually the players we have are not bad but as a unit can come up short against teams that counter quickly or have pace out wide. We miss some proper wingers and a busy, mobile engine in the middle. That said, Lansbury and Noble as a pair looked a little better than some of the other combinations we've seen.
On a downbeat note, I really fear for Collison in this West Ham squad. He may bounce back but I aint seeing much to be positive about at the moment or most of this season tbh.

Polarised opinion eh ? :-)
He is playing very well at the moment and we should just be grateful for that. We will see over time if he is going to be more than a "flash in the pan". I see enough positive things to believe Sam may have picked us a gem but experience of many false dawns has taught me to be cautious :-)

Good post Sir Alf.
Worth saying again that Vaz Te has played a lot of his games here from a flank. Which makes his performances and goal return all the more impressive.

I guess its the fact that most teams cannot pay multi millions for a striker unless they are in that elite group of clubs and so we are only too pleased to get a player on a budget that seems to be performing like a player who cost a lot more. Hence the focus on the price but I yes it could be a deal predicated on appearances, if we get promotion etc... where we have to make additional payments. That said even if it went us high as 3, 4 or 5 million, he would still represent good business based on his performances so far. That said, we should not get ahead of oursleves. This is Vaz Te's best season by far in a series of inconsistent ones. Hopefully, BFS has found the role and team set up to get the best out of him and it will continue but things will now get harder for him as his reputatuibn grows, I for one, hope he can handle it. :)

I wish people would stop comparing players to their transfer fee all the time. In this case a transfer that very few know the details of.

I think a lot of it is down to him playing in his preffered position and having a bit of licence to roame. Didn't know much about him until he signed, like many on here, but has gone on to show what a good signing he's been. I tip my hat to him. Shows there must be others out there.

Re: Ricardo Vaz Te

Exceeding expectations and in the best form of his short career but... a player has to do it over several seasons before we can really say he is the real deal. Looks to have what it takes in terms of speed, close control and above all else he can shoot and head the ball with power and hit the target more times than not.
Just saying that things will become harder as his reputation grows. Opposition defences will start roughing him up and work out strategies to stop him operating. If he can continue to deliver then we can say we have a real gem like, say, Ashton who could even score when he was half fit with a fused ankle.
That said, for a million quid he represents good business thats for sure.

I was one who said we should sign him in the Jan transfer thread. He was scoring some good goals for Barnsley earlier this season, especially the away goal against Leicester and one of the fastest goals of the season against Palace. I was at the Barnsley game at UP in December and he was their best player by far back then. It's nice to be right once in a blue moon. *puts down his own trumpet after blowing it*

Obviously Allardyce was confidennt the lad had something when he signed him the first time, and he was confident to sign him again for a snip.
Certainly not the worst signing made by a West Ham manager.
We are only one or two transfer windows from being unplayable in the 2nd division and not half bad in the premier league.
