Britain will vote on whether to remain in the EU on Thursday 23 June, Prime Minister David Cameron has said.
The prime minister made his historic announcement in Downing Street after briefing the cabinet.
He said he would be campaigning to remain in a reformed EU - and described the vote as one of the biggest decisions "in our lifetimes".

The EU probably does more to help the poorer parts of the UK than Westminster ever will.
If you honestly think Westminster and the ruling classes care about the working class then you are being very naive.
They can wait to tear up all legislation that helps the lower classes.remember rees mogg "we should be more like india" comment?

The North is suffering because of years of bad government both locally and in Westminster. Quick ideological fixes that effectively destroy relations with international partners is not going to help Tyneside, and you ought to know this perfectly well, Descent. Meanwhile, the people who sell the snake oil that it's all the fault of business and its ties to the EU must be brought to justice before access to proper investment led by local initiatives in part through cohesion funding turns the situation around.

Go and tell that to the people of Sunderland, or Bridgeport, or Carlisle.

They will tell you that nothing will change if that's the case.

You idiots really don't fucking get it, do you.

You are suffering Miike - finding perverse satisfaction in calling the people who wish you nothing but good names is a well-known behaviour pattern.

Such a shame really.

Pickled's found another barrel with a bottom to scrape.

It'll be a cask of that "I-told-you-so impotence" he seems to relish so much.

All & any pain will rest solely on the shoulders of the entitlement classes, whatever colour rosette they choose today.

None of the problems are of Brexitter making - all can be laid at the feet of the traitorous & selfish remainers; if they got on with supporting the inevitable instead of forcing their vain hopes on the rest of the nation, the UK would, by now, have had most of the issues associated with leaving covered.

What? YOU demand "proof" when you refuse to provide the same for your claims? Go swivel.

It will be proof writ large when the remain camp shut the fuck up and the grown-ups can get on with what they need to be getting on with.

Enjoy the instability, depreciating currency, underinvestment, falling purchasing power for the vast majority and the rising wealth of the few disgustingly rich connected to the flows of international crime money - it's what you've helped to organise.

And this poverty to which you refer is based on the idea that you cannot have free trade between nation states without signing up to a political project that requires an annual fee to be part of a protectionist area (note the obvious contradiction which is exactly what the EU is)

Re: EU Referendum 23rd June 2016 declares Cameron
The Brexit Establishment has created a siege mentality among its supporters that pits them against the EU and the rest of the country as actual combat enemies. The lie here is especially perfidious because the basic concern of non-Brexiters is the common good and healthy political and economic relations with the UK’s main trade partner, allowing for stable business conditions for investment, jobs and prosperity. Meanwhile, in reality, the Brexit Establshment offers nothing but years of poverty in exchange for the satisfaction of having been victorious over an imaginary enemy.

So you admit that if the people decide to oppose the EU directives through the ballot box, they should be made to suffer

There's no political force, party or person that will unify the country. You thinking of a war.

Re: EU Referendum 23rd June 2016 declares Cameron
The political force that will unite the country following Camaron’s catastrophic referendum will make sure the main architects of this totally unnecessary conflict with the EU’s main trading partner are brought to justice.

But first to true pain of Brexit will have to be felt, and that hasn’t even started yet.

El Coucho

And yet the 2005 Labour election manifesto contains a clear commitment to hold an EU referendum and, as much as he hates to be reminded of this, Nick Clegg and the LibDems called for an EU referendum in 2008

Why are you STILL trying to force this into a red vs blue matching? It's not and never was; have YOU learned NOTHING over the last 2 years? Oh, wait! You're a remainer- your education is long finished.

The reason for calling the referendum is irrelevant - that the British public took it upon itself to seize the opportunity to tell the bloated, non-productive administrative layer of society where it could shove the EU in it's current form is all that matters.

Lest you forget, Cameron DID go to the EU and try and get some changes (and all (ALL) the EU had to do was to "promise to look into the possibilities"), and remain would have sailed through the referendum. In reality, the EU has brought this upon itself - it has well and truly fucked one of it's 3 golden geese.

The ADULT response from the moment the referendum result was announced was to start planning for exit day, not start bickering because you didn't get your own way in a democratic vote you were perfectly happy to participate in (before the result was announced).

Re: EU Referendum 23rd June 2016 declares Cameron
Brexit is primarily a Tory thing. We only had the referendum
because the Tories couldn't stop arguing about Europe. You are right again Johnners. Brexit is supported by the right of the Tory party and by the left of the Labour Party. Corbyn and Rees-Mogg make interesting bedfellows.
