Saturday football
Seems odd to have Premier league games on when it's semi final Fa cup weekend.

Hoping Rafa can do us a favour later, otherwise we could drop a place today.

Cheers
Have noticed its on and might try and watch some of the final games.
I think the A League is doing ok. The better young players are always going to be aiming at European contracts but they do seem to try and play properly.
Helps that the big European population in Australia ... Brits, Italians , Greeks, Turks adds a bit of life to the crowds.
Seems to be feeding through to the national team as well where they finally have eased out the oldtimers (bar CAHILL) who probably went on too long into the 2014 World Cup.

They've been showing all a-league games on BT sports for a few years now Sven, so I've always watched it as not much other sport on at that time of the day.

Considering there aren't many huge stars in it, the football has always been a pretty decent standard.

All on the floor from every team.

Today's was an absolute belter and good to see a packed house going absolutely mental for the goals. Old skool celebrating and falling over the seats.

Re: Saturday football
Apart from the history there isn't really scope for promotion and relegation in the AFL so putting 8 out of 18 in the playoffs extends the interest for most teams.
The other state leagues are now regarded as feeder leagues for the AFL and players are really competing to be drafted into the AFL.
I think the Melbourne AFL teams have affiliated VFL teams where they play the rest of their squad and two of the WAFL teams (East Perth & Peel) are now controlled by the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle effectively as reserve teams.

The NFL started in 1920 & the NBA in 1946
My Australian rules team West Perth were formed in 1885 so think we had a head start.

The old Page McIntyre system with 4 teams in the playoffs was invented in Australia in the 1930's and adopted by the old VFL. They had used various other playoff systems since the 1890's.
Now that the AFL is 18 teams and a closed competition with a draft and salary cap they have a more complicated system with 8 teams in the playoffs with advantages such as double chances and home finals for higher finishers.

I would say there are pros for either system.

Having too many teams make the playoffs can make a lot of the season less meaningful and relegation is a amazing counter-motivation. You then get draft systems which have their problems.

That said playing a series against a team in playoffs can really build animosity and rivalry. You really get to know the other teams players after playing seven games against them. And you can always guarantee the championship is decided in one game with two of the best teams playing.

Same as practically all major American sports then?

Having said that, I like our system better, at least there's an interest in a bottom of the league scrap which you don't get with having playoffs but no relegation

Re: Saturday football
Interesting that like most Australian sports the A League has never had a culture of giving the title to the team that finishes top but have a playoff series.
If you aren't going to have relegation then an extended finals series (like the AFL putting 8 of the 18 teams into the playoffs) is a necessity.

Where was that on, Grump?
I see WSW are leading 5-4 in extra time

Re: Saturday football
Another thing I notice when watching the oz league, is I don't think I ever see a bad referee. Can all spot a dive and pet the games flow.

No bookings for celebrating with the crowd after goals or any of that shit.

Obviously why they don't get the gigs at world cups!!

Re: Saturday football
Absolutely superb game currently going on between WSW and Brisbane roar.

WSW 4-3 up after being 3-0 down.

Re: Saturday football
Oh and the added bonus, it gives the salesman running Manchester Utd an excuse to keep LVG for another season rather than have to concede he is clueless in the top chair and replace him with someone decent.

So another season of underperformance from the Mancs then.

Shame the reporter didn't ask him like when the referee didn't give a foul for your goal against West Ham in the quarter final

Everton

Absolutely nothing from their season, then.

Martinez has to go doesn't he?

Shame because a decent manager might do something with that squad.

Re: Saturday football
No fan of the Mancs but I despise Everton, dirty filthy cunts with an absolute prick of a 'we could have signed him' manager.

I note they maimed another player in the week.

Causers of pain suffering the pain of a last minute goal - nice

Loved that finish, fuck Martinez and that tin pot club.

Man Utd to go on and win it now and help us qualify for Europe and also keep that weird cunt in a job.
