This 3 at CB formation - not really working is it
It's not actually the CBs that are the problem, in fact most of them are playing well, but it means we set up every game to counter attack relinquishing possession and without a striker becomes a bit pointless.
I think this is also the reason why Payet and Lanzini have struggled because the need the ball to dictate games.
Got to go to a back 4 and flood the midfield, with Kouyate back in there.
Bilic wont though.

Need 4. 4 1. 1...or 4 3. 2 1. ...or how about 4. 4. 2

But ee need 2 proper full bscks...

Never under Bilic it seems...

Re: This 3 at CB formation - not really working is it
When we first started playing 3 at the back the way it looked to me was that Ogbonna and Kouyate were often moving into midfield with the ball, creating an extra man there and allowing us to pass the ball forward through the midfield.

In recent games they've not been doing that much and we've been playing too deep, isolating the attacking players and relying too much on the wing backs to do all the work of bringing the ball forward.

The facts are 12 points after thirteen games. The stats show the reality that we do not have the attacking threat we had last season and simultaneously we are not defending as well either.

The move to a back three and the return of Cresswell made a difference and we have looked more competitive in recent league games. Forget last night's tonking, and let's hope the players and manager do the same. We need to carry the better PL showing of late into the Arsenal game.

At the moment having 3 centre halves means that 2 of them are being taken out by a simple pass instead of 1 of them when we had a back 4.
In that 3-5-2 system you need to have control of the midfield and keep your forward players like Payet up the pitch.
The centre of the three centre backs needs to be able to step into midfield .... something Oxford might do if he was a few years older.

I'm not sure what our best system is ..... what is the one that suits a team with no right back or strikers?

Agreed - it was the mobility and fluidity of the midfield last year that made us so successful last season. I.e bodies supporting the front man.

I don't buy into this Payet is off nonsense. He's pissed off because he isn't getting the ball in this formation. He said as much in an article after Sunday.

If I have one criticism of Bilic, it's that he gave up on his plan A too quickly.

I don't like this new system at all.

We should be playing (as near as possible) to the team that played for most of last year. A few bad results at the start of the season in a new cesspit of an arena doesn't change the fact its our best side.

Maybe wallop Kouyate in as a right back in a back 4!!

Three at the back can work if you push the wing backs up to make a five in midfield with the wide midfielders drifting inside and of course you need two special midfielders who can do a lot of the dog work hence why Chelsea are playing it well. Problem is if you are always defending like we are the wing backs never get forward enough. The one occasion Cresswell did last night we scored from it.

Only thing its shown is what a fantastic defender Kouyate is.

The unfortunate reality that neither three at the back or a conventional back four seems to work for us.

Antonio is just as poor at defending at either RB or RWB.
He is a right midfielder

He seems to have lost the ability to pass the ball as well

Of course it doesn't work, and Bilic hasn't got a clue what to do about it either. Beginning to look out of his depth now, unfortunately.

Re: This 3 at CB formation - not really working is it
Probably doesn't work because it requires Antonio to play at the back quite a lot and he showed again last night that he really is not up to it. How the hell we bought such rubbish in the summer and gifted Tomkins to Palace defies belief!

Re: This 3 at CB formation - not really working is it
Agreed. Said it over and over.

Someone needs to do a job at right back for the time being, just like Tomkins did. Reece Burke should not be on loan. Oxford should have been used at least once. If Noble and kouyate were struggling, obiang should have been added or replaced one. Instead we accommodated everyone, which may show a lack of balls.

We need time on the ball for the creative players to play. We need it for the recovery it gives the runners in the team. We need it to shift up the pitch.

Quickly losing faith.

We've been forced into it because Bilic bought a load of rubbish and fell out with our only proper right back. Blokes a fucking idiot.
