I bet Lou Rowan wasn't umpiring.

Re: Cook resigns
It appears Jack Fingleton was lbw in 1932 and Ashley Mallet was run out in 1968.
Apart from that every batsmen was bowled.

Re: Cook resigns
Before DRS was a top-order Aussie batsmen ever given out LBW, caught off a thin edge, stumped or run out in a home test?

Lou (not a single LBW against Australia in a six test series) Rowan.

Re: Cook resigns
Sven.Cookie is one of the few batsman that you actually look at that looks like a proper test player... great concentration... guts.. and a pretty good technique... T20 has not ruined his game

Re: Cook resigns
Probably because all they are bothered about nowadays is T20 cricket and earning the cheap dollars rather than earning it the hard way... Bats, pitches, bowling, no bouncers, boundaries brought in... even DRS.... all in the batsman favour...

Re: Cook resigns
Oh I do, Northern.

But if it's so much easier to bat in modern day cricket, why is there no current test player (now that Voges has retired) in the top 20 all time test batting average list?

Sven Roeder 2:53 Wed Feb 15
Re: Cook resigns
So you are saying Alistair Cook is just a pointy headed Mark Lathwell then , Northern?
Lucky to be born in the modern era

Re: Cook resigns
westside..... you obviously don't remember the hordes of umpire mistakes before DRS then like being given out lbw after you have smashed the cover off it... being run out after being yards in... generally walking if a slipper had nodded and said he caught it... works both ways fella...

Re: Cook resigns
Well that's modern bats, covered wickets and mediocre modern day test bowling for you...

As opposed to batsman not being able to pad up to balls pitching outside off stump, DRS making umpires much more likely to give lbw's on the front foot against spin bowling, 3rd umpire line decisions making run outs and stumpings more likely to be given and modern day fielding (catching and ground cricket) making it harder for batsman to score runs.

Not wanting to be seen to be defending an Australian, just pointing out modern cricket isn't entirely in the batsman's favour.

Re: Cook resigns
Stokes as vice captain seems an odd call. Does anyone really believe he'd be the best man to take over if Root breaks his foot or whatever later this year? Why not give it to Broad for a couple of years, get Stokes to learn from him, and then give Stokes the role in a couple of years when Broad in all likelihood will give up international cricket at least at test level? Odd.

Re: Cook resigns
To be fair I'm basing my statement mostly on him being given a reprieve on about 5 as a result of a phantom no ball call from (I think it was) Richard Illingworth, and going on to score a double ton against us last year.

What a shit call that was. Not as bad as the "could have come from anywhere" HotSpot call, but shit nonetheless.

Take that 200 off and he only averages 50.

Re: Cook resigns
Jammy?
When he first started for Western Australia he was competing for a spot with Rogers, Langer, Katich, Martyn , M Hussey & D Hussey.
To get into the Aust team and knock out Ponting, S Waugh M Waugh etc

Has done well when the competition cleared a bit !

Re: Cook resigns
Voges is one of the jammiest cricketers ever.

You can take his double hundred against NZ off his list for starters.

He'd only average about 50 then. Bloody English umpires really seem to have it in for the Black Caps.

highest batting average is now Steven SMITH.
50 Tests , average 60.15

Re: Cook resigns
That's of players with a minimum of 20 Tests
Quite bizarre that he had an average of 40 odd which he himself would probably say was about right (he was the first to have a sense of humour about the BRADMAN-LIKE numbers) no one would mind.
But since he averaged 61 people get all worked up

Good bloke Adam and hopefully he keeps doing good things for WA and the Perth Scorchers.

This of course means that the current player with the highest batting average is now Steven SMITH.
