West Ham face mounting opposition over bid to move World Cup Champions statue to London Stadium

•West Ham want to move the statue from near Upton Park to their new ground
•Thousands of residents living near the statue are campaigning for it to stay
•Newham Council are expected to vote on the issue within the next two months
•The Hammers say 87 per cent of supporters want the statue to be transferred

West Ham's desire to move the Champions statue from near Upton Park to the London Stadium faces mounting opposition.

The Hammers had given the impression to fans that the sculpture of 1966 World Cup winners Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and Ray Wilson would be relocated by the start of next season and only red tape around funding was delaying the move.

But thousands of residents living near the statue, which stands 300 yards from the Boleyn Ground, are campaigning for it to stay, meaning its future will now come down to a Newham Council vote expected within two months.

Councillor Veronica Oakeshott, who has the sculpture in her ward, said: 'There is very strong feeling around here that the statue remains.

'The people want a reminder of the 100 years of West Ham history that took place down the road. It's not the football club's property. It wasn't their idea to commission it and they paid for less than half of it.

'We're also going to try to have the statue given Listed status and that is supported by local MP Stephen Timms. Even former West Ham stars like Clyde Best don't want it moved.'

West Ham said their commissioned poll shows 87 per cent of fans want the Champions statue transferred, but that survey was conducted more than three years ago.

Re: The Statue
Either leave where it is or move to a central location inside the Upton Gardens. Commission a new statue and indeed some more around the ground ... move on

Re: The Statue
Surely it has to stay. Within a short time that (and perhaps tje Boleyn, although I doubt it) will be the only thing to remind people that there was ever a football ground in the area.

Packing it up and moving it to Stratford would be another step along the 'history begins' road.

It wasn't meant to be in Stratford. It wasn't built for Stratford. It has never been in Stratford, it has no connection to Stratford, and it commemorates an achievement which didn't happen when West Ham were playing in Stratford.

Re: The Statue
Leave it where it is, that's where it belongs part of the local area history, nothing whatsoever to do with what's happening in Stratford, if the Club felt it was so important at the time they would have paid for it.

Re: The Statue
How about four new statues - one for Mooro outside his stand, one for Trev at his end and then maybe Greenwood and Lyall together at the main stand and Bonzo lifting the FA Cup completing the set.

Any votes for any others? A white horse, maybe, on the walk up to the stadium?

Re: The Statue
WHO on this thread would ever see it again if it stayed on Barking Rd?

as if you'll head to Upton Gardens for a prematch latte is it.

Its a statue that celebrates West Ham's part in the 1966 England team, i know loads of oppo fans who have gone tk the statue & it needs to be enjoyed by footballs fans not left as a 'wrst ham woz ere' symbol in an area noone cares about

Re: The Statue
The owners wont commission another one for the OS; it will mean putting their hands in their pockets.

Re: The Statue
Leave it where it is, in view from the Boleyn Pub, which is the closest we'll have to a monument of the old ground. The new estate with players names for streets, (if that is what they do), will not count.

Re: The Statue
Leave it where it is so it acts as a permant reminder of our time there.

Build a new one of Gold, Sullivan, ,Brady and Bilic in honour of them saving the club 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ship it to Tottenham's new ground, so that Bobby can get the dream move he always wanted.

Re: The Statue
Moving this statue would be wrong in so many ways ,by its existence at the Boleyn it is a statement in itself that "Once a football team played here" i for one would like it to remain there forever.

Re: The Statue
Bad wording from me....

Know we dont own it, but its main purpose was for WHU fans and the football club. Where it is now theres just no attachment, it wont be appriecated half as much as what it should be.

Get it to the OS to overlook the champions place stones, i thought that was the plan ?

Re: The Statue
There must be an iconic image out there featuring Bobby, Billy & Sir Trev... that would be a more fitting statue to commission surely... just the three of them with their arms around each others shoulders... lovely.
