Are you any good at PLAYING football?
Got to admit as much as I love the game and try my heart out, im pretty shit!!!

Before leaving the UK I played regularly for local teams. The last team was a village side near Bristol in some local league competition, and I player for the reserves, often as the reserve, often doubles as a linesman as although the local league provided a Referee, the 2 linesman were more often than not the Subs for the 2 sides playing particularly if the weather was shit.

The piss ups after the game were always a good laugh though, mind you we used to meet at the Pub before the game have few pints to get us ready, half time consisted of half an orange and a quick ciggie, and at full time half the side wouldn’t even bother with shower it was straight back to the Pub………..

Those were the days.

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
I played for various School teams & clubs in decent amateur leagues, captaining most of them. The biggest crowd I played in front of was approx 1500 in a junior game at 14 years old. We were the warm up game for the Harvard v Yale annual University match in Cambridge, Mass USA & I scored in a 2-1 win for Westfield. I then returned to the UK & captained Goodall youth (Double winners) we won all 16 league games! Then on to Leyton Athletic who were very good & I played for the league representative team for 2 years, winning a London leagues cup. I was briefly at Crown & Manor in the Athenian league, but shift working stopped me training every week. After that local Sunday football with Roker (Upminster) & Freemans (Hornchurch). I was a tough tackling Centre Half & finally 3 years as a goalkeeper. Billy Bonds was my footballing hero & I like to think I was a poor mans version of him! I ended up coaching & Managing teams my son played in as a youngster. I'm 67 now & only wish I could still play, it was the best time!

TC presenting me with the top scorer trophy at the 2nd WHO tournament was my pinnacle. Where do you go after that? Back to the bar, correct.

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
I was quick as fuck, and a tough tackler but was totally lacking in ability.
Was a great defensive full back but fucking so average going forward

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
I've played at good semi pro levels, but hated the travelling.
Bury St. Edmunds, Wivenhoe Town & Cornard United with a few apps for Braintree Town.
Pretty much won everything possible at local level Saturday & Sunday leagues including Essex cups and to cap it off was in the winning side in a FFS Frankie Mac Tournament!

Pretty tidy...

Captained Watford district, played for Herts County and various rep sides.

Oh, and the highlight was winning the WHO Tournament back to back.

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
I played for Ongar Minors as a lad, then for Castle ( we were big I can assure you). I played for my school a few times ands then my mates and I formed a team to play the local Junior school - watched by a fair crowd.

30 at least.

So basically - no. Love playing but got no stamina, knackered in a heart beat.

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
I played at County League and South Midlands level and continued playing at reserve level until 49. I took up football coaching and management and won a trophy every year for 5 consecutive seasons as well as starting coaching kids teams for my village club which continue to this day.

I was half decent back in the day, packed it all in 2 years ago, I'm 48 now. I once put Tony Currie on his arse when I was about 17, at Warners holiday camp at Dovercourt Bay, to be fair he was probably the age I am now though.

you should take up the game again Justin, if only to give someone a change to break both your legs.

I was, had trials at Ipswich, Brighton and the Os as a youngster. I was quite a skinny kid though and that probably counted against me.

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
I could tackle and slot a pass with the best of them. Sadly I was blessed with the pace of snail. like a diesel engine though, I could go for days, and like Jasnik, I still take every chance I get to play. There's little in this world I enjoy more than playing in a good game of football. .

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
used to play in the Essex Business Houses league in the 90s for a team called Facility FC
loved every minute of that as we were a bunch of mates who went to school in Upminster
all fell apart when we hit early 30s due to injuries/marriage etc
i can still talk a good game

Re: Are you any good at PLAYING football?
Played in goal for Kingstonians FC at the same time as Graeme Roope. Well, not in the same game.

The bloke that was stopping me from getting into the first team once Roope stopped was Tommy Kiery. Kiery got killed in a motorbike accident.

I went off to play cricket in Australia around that time, so didn't affect me football wise. Shocking to read about Tom in the local newspapers though. He was a seriously good goalkeeper.

Great laugh though and never want to give it up.

That's a great shame Irish. Bugger to get badly injured at such a young age.
