The debates between him and Tyndale, both referring back to the arch-humanist Erasmus, are some of the most important founding works in the movement.

Which Thomas More? The "Humanist" Thomas More who had heretics burned at the stake?

THAT Thomas More?

Re: Is the colonisation of America any worse than the holocaust...
Thomas More was a great humanist. Polly Toynbee not so much.

I agree with that if back to the original 16th/17th meaning of the movement, which was couched in a very established set of values.

The Civilizing Process: Norbert Elias

From a review on Amazon

There was a time when the notion of civilisation and its associated connotations did not exist and in terms relative to the entire history of mankind that time was not too long ago. Nowadays we take artefacts such as cutlery for granted, we consider the likes of spitting indoors (or even spitting in general) disgusting, we regard sex in public as somehow wrong and we imagine violence as somehow primitive or animalistic. In the ‘civilised society’ of today these and indeed many more values go unquestioned and to a large extent will remain unquestionable.

In my opinion. A set of values that developed over a number of millennia combined with a general prosperity to point of being able to think beyond you and your closest associates' next meal.

Print and later technologies that spread an understanding that groups other than your own had a similar humanity also helped I think.

"The civilising process" brought about by political, philosophical and practical thought where there is a greater net gain to behave in a civil and "humane' ( ag ag ag) way.

"The vast majority of tribes, cities, countries, empires have historically acted primarily in their own self-interest; it is only relatively recently we have started to question it."

What do you think it is about our society that has brought this about?

New Canadians and new Americans wiped out most of the indigenous tribes of N America. Just stop making excuses and get over it

Will, did you actually read what I wrote?

kirok1 11:18 Sat Feb 25

I agree a lot of that. As I said biology was by far the biggest killer, but forced migrations and destruction of food and habitat, along with a number of direct violent attacks killed significant numbers of people.

The reserve/reservation system is a lot like apartheid in many ways and I have been around deaths that indirectly resulted from it. But some of that is like looking at who is to blame for the junkie that dies in a London slum.

The vast majority of tribes, cities, countries, empires have historically acted primarily in their own self-interest; it is only relatively recently we have started to question it.

The lowest figure for secular Jews killed I've seen (in the last ten minutes - but that accords with my previous impression that there were lots) is 30%.

Isn't getting on for 2 million people a bit of an oversight?

it's important you bear in mind that the north american indian tribes themselves displaced earlier races. they weren't indigineous. depends what timeframe you take these things over.
