30 years since the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster

The 30th anniversary is on Monday.
Out of all the many disasters that happened in the late 1980's, this one stood out for some reason.
One fella fell asleep and didn't close the bow doors. In less than a minute the whole ferry capsized and 193 people were killed.
A girl from our school in the year above was killed. She was only 17 iirc.

forgettting the MS Estonia. I met a Swedish girl who lost a brother on that ship. It was the 10th anniversary when I was there.
2nd after only the Titanic in terms of lives lost in peacetime. 850.

Very appropriately name boat, set off with the doors open to minimise turn round time.
Remember a girl being interviewed after and being asked was it women and children first to which she replied " the Titanic it fucking wasn't "

My best mate lost his Sister, Brother in Law and two kids on the ferry, I will neve forget the phone call from him :-(

Probably the sort of thing that wouldn't have really registered at the time, as I was only 12 and so wouldn't have read the papers or watched the news, which was basically all we had in those days.

For reason I remember it being the day some kids show was going to start and I was up early on the Saturday to see what the new kids show was going to be about.
Turned on the telly and it was all special report news. I was gutted.
Don't know if I've remembered that right or not. Think it was Going Live or a something like that.

Killed the town that did. Lot of local people lost their lives along with travellers. Dover was a bit of a dump anyway, but after that it never recovered. I'd moved away by then, but went to school or knew quite a few of the lads who went under. Townsend then very quickly rebranded itself as P&O the parent company.

The amount of lorry drivers that 'just missed it' is phenomenal, almost as many that were in the SAS during the embassy siege.
On another note when we load PA rigs and have to turn a flight case upside down it's referred to as 'Belgium'

I had a friend who lost both parents, their only child, he was about 20 and cracked up drinking heavily picking fights and then emigrated to Melbourne for a new life, never heard from him again.

A bloke I knew from uni was on it with his wife and baby daughter. He just went to the loo and then it all started. He couldn't get back to them and they both died. They never found the body of the baby.

Was on a Townsend Thoresen boat in the 70s pulling into port on the other side and they opened the doors early to save time. Was scary seeing all that open water in front of you.

worked on the sister ship at the time,saw photographs of inside the Herald, life jackets everywhere awful a catering boy was found in a cupboard dead.Saw it being towed away at night, a black silohette no lights of of the portholes creepy.
9 months later P&O wanted to increase hours and lower manning.
