Slaven Bilic's training methods questioned as Reece Oxford "surprised" by Reading's intensity
Oxford has been off the pace at new club Reading

By Sam Inkersole

Reading boss Jaap Stam has criticised at West Ham's pre-match preparation, saying that loanee Reece Oxford has been surprised at the Royals’ training intensity.

Oxford signed with the Championship side on loan for six months on deadline day, but until this past weekend the 18-year-old talent had yet to appear for his new club.

That changed on Saturday when Oxford came on as a substitute in Reading’s 3-0 defeat away at Preston North End in the but the teenager only managed to get 18 minutes of action under his belt after replacing Paul McShane.

Stam’s comments about Oxford's lack of preparation appear be a thinly veiled dig at the regime at Rush Green, which is something that another Hammers loanee, Enner Valencia, has also hinted at.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Friday's game against Sheffield Wednesday, former Manchester United defender Stam said: "Reece Oxford has been surprised at the level of intensity in training at Reading, compared to at West Ham.

"Young players need to improve. You need to be on top of them and give them good advice, so that’s why training is intense."

Back in September, Valencia – who is on loan at Everton this season – also threw shade at Hammers training methods, saying: "I have enjoyed training with my new team-mates, it’s different to my last team - it is a little bit harder."

Poor old Reading. The players were clearly too tired to defend properly...

I meant a disappointment and a bit of a heavy defeat rather than advocating physically attacking young players

'maybe a bit of smack sometimes isn't a bad thing for a young player.'

I see Oxford as maybe the middle of a back 3 or as a defensive midfielder as you say
Bit of a kick in the teeth for him today but maybe a bit of smack sometimes isn't a bad thing for a young player.
If he is going to be on the wrong end of a 7-1 better he does it in someone elses shirt.

Just watched highlights on Channel 5. Poor Oxford didn't look too assured but he's only played around 170 minutes football since he went on loan there after several weeks injury and wasn't used by Bilic at all this season. He's still a bit young to step in at CB, and perhaps a couple of years as a defensive midfielder might do him the world of good.

Said at the time that the egg headed clog wearer should maybe concentrate on making sure his own collection of Stripey Nigels last the season and have something left for the playoffs.
How is that going?

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
Our next few games are mostly against teams below us. If they continue to perform in the manner of last Saturday's shocker, it might be wise for Bilic and his coaching staff to start looking for new employment.

Don Ravioli has it right. Jogged my memory that and found this.

and this, its sounds like Hi Di Hi over there at the minute.

Bilic said: 'I said at the beginning of the season, when we moved into our newly refurbished training ground, that I wanted to create an environment where players felt comfortable spending time there before and after training, and would be happy to bring their kids sometimes.

Re: Jaap Stam criticises Bilic's training methods
Fitness is just one of those basic things that you expect a professional athlete to have.

I watch a lot of kickboxing, and when you see super heavyweights fighting, they tend to be blowing out their arses after the first round, and it just turns into two fat blokes throwing haymakers at each other.

I also watch the All Blacks a lot (no really) and the thing that separates them from the rest of the rugby world (aside from just being better rugby players) is that 99% of the time, they are able to maintain their intensity, and often increase it, later on in games.

You might stick with them for 60 or 70 minutes, but get blown away in the last 10 or 20 because the base level of fitness is there.

We're definitely closer (Antonio aside) to the super-heavyweight kickboxer than we are the the All Blacks rugby player.

Surely it can't be that hard to get a team fit and keep them fit.

The lack of fitness & intensity is for all to see on match days & has been for some time.

Billic just hasn't got a Scooby.
