Kazakhstan
Looks like I'm off to Kazakhstan for a month.
I hope I won't be destined to a month of Besbarmak (boiled horse and pasta)

Has anyone on here been to the land of Borat?

WH67 - well I'll still be in Dhaka come kick-off of Ramadan, where they do take it seriously

In Kazakhstan most of them drink away quite happily, so I doubt Ramadan will be much of an issue.

sorry - just seen you'll be in Atyrau. Not been there. But probably more nightttime options than Kyzylorda!

Re: Kazakhstan
Been 5 or 6 times over last 2-3 years.

Spent most of my time in Kyzylorda, which is fairly non-descript. And unless you speak Russian (or Kazakh) can be challenging, you'd be reliant upon any companions who can speak English and Russian.

However, I usually had a night or two in Almaty on the way over (due to flight schedules). Almaty is a nice city and whilst not speaking Russian (or Kazakh) is a hindrance there, it's possible to get by with English.

A lot depends on where you'll be. And I assume you're there for the summer (much better than -10/-15/-25 /-35 etc in winter, depending upon where you are)

Beshbarmak isn't too bad actually.

If you're in Almaty then I can recommend Zafran restaurant, just down the hill from the Shakespear Arms (one of the expat hangouts - Zafran was being renovated I believe when i was last in Almaty) and also a really good Georgian restaurant the name of which escapes me, but if you will be in Almaty, PM me and I'll try to find its name/ coordinates.

Air Astana are okay as an airline.

One Kazakh airline I avoided though doesn't have a very inviting name: SCAT Aviation!

Re: Kazakhstan
Did a three week overland trip, Dushanbe to Khorog to Osh to Bishkek to Almaty, fantastic scenery and people, travel was slow and difficult but worth the effort. Bishkek and Osh were very dodgy when I was there, curfews at night. Saw less of Kasakhstan than the other two but it seemed slightly less chaotic. As with anywhere in ex USSR, practice drinking lots of vodka and you'll be fine

Re: Kazakhstan
Been to Kazkahstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Just the capitals and the bits between them sadly (well, Almaty rather than Astana).

As has been said, Uzbekistan has some incredible architecture. Had the nicest meat I've ever had in my life in Kyrgyzstan - horse steak! All three have lovely people, but the Kazakhs are something else. All Uzbeks are cab drivers - you just stick your arm out and someone will stop if they feel like making 20p.

Sadly mine was a whirlwind trip, because there's an incredible amount to see in the countries between them. While they're obviously not 'undiscovered' they're not exactly popular, which is great. Always nice to be somewhere where you're a novelty.

Yeah I know its a big tick on the backpacker route but i was put off by the countries political problems. if youre happy with it, go for it (we always tend to overestimate countries issues from outside). Obviously the big thing in that area is stay away from the Afghan border.

Re: Kazakhstan
Gav, strange you should say that. Kyrgyzstan is supposed to be the most "tourist friendly" of those countries, half decent infrastructure, well organised tours, hotel staff who speak English etc. Got a mate who's been there and he said it's by far his fav holiday destination, breathtaking landscapes, really friendly curious locals and good night life, and completely safe.

Considering how important that part of the world was in the past it's pretty mad that most people seem to know literally fuck all about it (which there's obvious reasons for)
