How come Mourinho is getting a free pass?
They've done no better really than Under the last two managers in terms of points, performances, trophies and league position, yet while the others got absolutely hammered in the media from Christmas onward, there's barely been a negative word printed about the bloke in comparison. Just being let off the hook because it's 'the special one', or has he been lucky to be overshadowed by Wenger and to a lesser extent Guardiola's similar failings?

Sure they might win the Europa league, but they bloody ought to with the squad they have considering who else is in the tournament, although if you ask them 3 years ago and they'd barely consider that trophy worth getting on a plane for.

In addition, he's got an even better and more expensive squad than the last two managers and still not improved anything. Why is there no endless stream of articles about how he's failed despite spending hundreds of millions of points and why he should be fired?

Bookies were giving even money on Man Utd to win. Decent evening!

Indeed. You can pinpoint three maybe four different teams / sqauds in the Fergie era that were successful. That was, for me, his key skill. The master of rebuilding and re-inventing. Each one of those successful teams / squads wer enot only great sides they had their own personalities and character. Reason why Fergie was one of the best ever.

But looking at since he has gone all the personality and character has gone and, to me, it seems Man Utd have a very skewed and confusing transfer policy. They just buy big because they are Man Utd. There's no plan or strategy.

Under Fergie they bought on the whole what you would call Man Utd players. Now they just buy marquee players that don't fit.

I think the one thing he had going for him was being the best manager of all time.

The one thing fergie seemed good at doing, apart from getting more from his players than others managers seemed to be able to, was rebuilding a squad. after he left their approach to transfer and squad building has been quite abysmal at times.

If Ferries stayed

that ship has sailed

Even Fergie.

If Ferries stayed, regardless of the squad, they would've won the league at least twice in the intervening years.

No he doesn't. In fact, he probably has the worst PR of any manager I have ever known. Because his PR is him. And he is a moaning toxic cunt.

What he does have is a managerial record that cannot be argued. And so the media are keeping quiet because if he does win two trophies, which is likely. He cannot stuff it back on their faces. If he loses both finals.....Well, you watch the media go. They are just waiting.

Re: How come Mourinho is getting a free pass?
Mourinho has good PR that's all.

BFS, Moyes or Pulis playing the same way for Man Utd would get crucified... because they don't have good PR.

Re: How come Mourinho is getting a free pass?
No idea how mourinho escapes as much criticism van gaal and even moyes. Ferguson did brilliantly to squeeze a final season out of Vera vidic and Ferdinand but left a shoddy ageing squad and most of his big money young signings failed (jones/smelling etc). Moyes was given very little money and they ended up signing fellaini for silly money at the last minute when they could have got him cheaper 2 months earlier due to a contract clause

Van gaal was then given shed loads to spend, and under achieved off the back of that but still managed to bring a few youngsters through playing solid football and trying to build butbwas criticised heavily for it

Mourinho has followed on spunking silly money (I have no idea on what planet pogba justifies being the worlds most expensive player) but has played even more negative football, whilst his complaints about the number of games are just absurd when they're playing those games directly as a result of two cup runs taking them to finals. If they'd be rearranged due to weather cancellations or other teams having replays causing congestion, I'd have some sympathy, but they have a huge and talented squad and it's been his decision to sell scneiderlin, schweinsteiger and depay all of whom could have done a job for him.

I know part of the whinging is to distract from the players failing but I really hope they lose later and are in the Europa again next year. If nothing else, Ajax play wonderful football and deserve a trophy for it

But you fail to see the point. For every big team that uses the UEFA cup as a way of qualifying for the CL there will ten smaller clubs that use it as a way of getting European football.

It is what it is and you can't criticise big clubs for doing what smaller clubs do. IT's the same for everyone.

If Mourinho had fielded full strength sides in the league and they had not qualified for CL anyway and then got knocked out of UEFA cup then that would be embarrassing and he would most certainly, and rightly, be sacked.

He used his noddle and did the right thing.

I can't stand the bloke or Man Utd but I can't see how any criticism can be aimed at Mourinho for throwing all his eggs in the UEFA cup basket when he knew the likelihood of CL qualification via the league was almost impossible.

I think you might mean Tony Henry mate.

Anyways, all the best mate, I've got better things to do than discuss Jose Mourinho & Man Utd on here. Suffice to say, the fact that a Man Utd manager had to sink to the level of playing youths after a 38 game season to ensure Champions League qualification through the back door is fairly embarrassing for a club who achieved so much over the past 26 years. But, to be honest, I generally don't really give a fuck - I'll still be watching and hoping Ajax give him more than a bloody nose.

"I'm sure our chief scout Jack Sullivan will be straight on Championship Manager looking up the stats of the Ajax strikers after the game."

Head of recruitment is Terry Westley, you might have seen the interview he gave on the OS recently?

Trevor B 9:37 Tue May 23
Re: How come Mourinho is getting a free pass?
It's not embarrassing. What would've been embarrassing is for him to have played full strength sides to end the season when they stood very little chance of attaining fourth, and when they are already beset with injuries, and blown the chance of CL qualification if they didn't have a strong enough and fit enough team to beat Ajax.

If we had done this you would've been cock-a-hoop.

The Champions League carrot was to help add a bit of extra impetus to a poorly organised competition. Not for the super powers of world football to use it as a back door to qualify. The man has spent hundreds of millions on players, broken the world transfer record, yet put out a youth team for a competitive Premier League game. Just over 15 years they won a treble with a squad of less than 20 top players. Now they are in 6th place, playing a youth team in a competitive fixture to secure a back door entry to a competition they should have qualified for through the league weeks ago. It's embarrassing.

On a side note, I was chatting to an Ajax fan in his 40s a couple of weeks back, said that that they have an incredible team of youngsters who would undoubtedly be picked off by the best within two years. Reckons they've gone under the radar because of Monaco. Hope we have one or two scouts watching tomorrow!
