How does Slaven or the board ascertain that when trying to sign a player like Giroud for example ...
They they're still ambitious and signing for the right reasons.

George Graham once said, never sign a player from a bigger club , as they act like they're doing you a favour by signing

Shoild we be looking for unproven players on the way up , or proven players on the way down?

How do you find that balence ?

I would think Giroud would be busting a gut next season to keep his place in the French national side for the world cup. After that though.....

On average I would imagine a club like West Ham would get more out of an Antonio than a Walcott.
Professional pride plays a massive part though.

I think it must be hard to be motivated if you're going to a team that isn't going to come close to winning anything from a team that regularly challenged. It would only be for the money and not having to move out of London if he's settled. Takes a proper grafter to play at full intensity despite the above. Is Giroud that sort of player? Not for me.

agreed- a more pompous, "put the ball there" striker you'd be hard pushed to find and I see no team spirit or leadershio from his- the opposite.

We can do better

You could apply the same logic from the op to almost any player, like a youngster who gets his lovely £80k a week 5 years deal and thinks 'fuck it I've made it' and stops trying

Is he cheap?

Will he take a pay cut?

Does he play on the right wing?

If yes to all of the above, sign him

I would expect :
You meet the player and get an impression of his character & motivations.
You have contacts in the game who have worked with the player and you get soundings
You have players at your club who have either worked with them or know those that do. For example I'm sure James Collins could be asked to talk to his Welsh teammate Aaron Ramsey about what Giroud is like around the club and as a character

Football is a small world and am sure word goes round as to who are the good guys & who are time wasters

George Graham wanted to sign players who thought HE was doing THEM a favour so he could get a bung.

It's probably in their personality. Some players are in the game just for the fame and fortune, so they see playing for you as a step down and not worth breaking a sweat over.

Other players are addicted to winning. Someone like Roy Keane comes to mind. No matter what level they play at, they have that competitive mindset and hate losing. Other good ones to look out for are those that really love playing football no matter the level, or who are honest grafters who have a strong work ethic.
