Barry Norman - Hovis
Film critic Barry Norman has died aged 83, his family says.
The journalist and former BBC presenter died in his sleep on Friday night.
A statement from his daughters, Samantha and Emma, called him "remarkable", adding: "He had a great life, a wonderful marriage and an enviable career."
Norman hosted BBC One's "Film…" show between 1972 and 1998 - its longest running host - as well as writing for the Daily Mail and the Guardian.
His literary agent, Curtis Brown, described him as "the defining voice of film criticism and insightful interviewing of screen legends from both sides of the camera".
Norman's daughters added: "He leaves behind a family who adore him and a great roster of friends who love him too. We will miss him more than we can say."

His voice along with the 'Film' music is very nostalgic. I hardly ever agreed with him. He panned the films I loved and loved the films I hated. But he bloody knew his stuff and was a great interviewer.

RIP Bazza.

RIP Barry. Used to love the Film - Whatever year it was that year. Remember getting my first look at The Wanderers on there, and Rock'n'Roll High School. As others have said, from the days when knowing something about a subject was a prerequisite to presenting a series about it.

Anyone who raved about Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. (And Why Not.!) Is alright in my books.

RIP Bazza.

Used to watch his programme religiously. The theme music always gave me a warm feeling. Ross ruined that show.

Let's not forget Barry's pickled onions. They're great.

And how sad Mail Online published a photo of Barry Cryer when first reporting this ..... as you say a time when journalists knew their subject !

From a time when TV presenters actually had to know something about the topic they were talking about

Shame he was a Communist Party member (probably)

I remember very vividly to this day it was in the early eighties seeing Barry Norman walking down Soho early morning in a suit and tie I was probably 13 and I thought two things 1) " That's Barry Norman from the TV", and 2) He looked much taller than he did on TV, but to be honest he hardly ever stood up did he?.
R.I.P Barry Norman a wonderful warm old school presenter who i doubt we will ever see the likes of again.

I think he once said that the Cook The Thief the wife and her lover was his favourite film of the 20th century or maybe the 1980s. Anyway, I didn't quite agree but got me into appreciating film in the 1970s.

that's a shame, i didnt always agree with him but I always enjoyed listening to him. much better than the cunt Ross, and unlike Winkleman actually reviewed films and didn't need weekly assistants to hold his hand
