he does like to dance sometimes at the front of the stage when egged on by Russell or the fans, anyone not a fan may be disturbed by what they see :.)

Surf. Cant argue with any of that. They are deeply derivative and no shame in that. The originality is in the deftness of lyrics for me. Harder to think of a better current rock and roll lyricist than Craig Finn, I would venture.
Agree with Mike too, First Night without piano just isn't half the song.

I love The Hold Steady, so much better when Franz is in the band

A bit of a cross between, the Clash, the Boomtown Rats, and Springsteen.

I find the vitality of the Clash and Boomtown Rats elements outweighs the sometimes earnest Springsteeniness, which I can take or leave. They also remind me a bit of TMBG, Green Day and Weezer.

In short, they get a thumbs up from me.

All IMHO of course.

Boy40 and chim
The only people who don't like The Hold Steady are those who haven't heard them.

Not even Surf could argue with that.

As for covers - Under my Thumb, Social D.
Pretty Woman and You Really Got me, Van Halen.
The World Turned Upside Down, Billy Bragg

The actual music is bad enough, but comparing the two videos bangs the final nails into Barlow's coffin.

The film, "This Must Be The Place" with Sean Penn.

The soundtrack is made up of loads of different covers of "This Must Be The Place" by Talking Heads.

Amazing film, amazing assortment of covers of an amazing original song, including David Byrne himself doing a new version of his own song.

Can't recommend it enough.

I remember desperately trying to get tickets for that but no luck.
First place I saw them Shepherds Bush Empire. Heard a cd of theirs via a mate on a drive up to Sheffield to see us lose 3-0(great escape didn't look on that day!)
Was blown away by it and went out and bought the first 3 albums, and have bought all others as soon as they are released. Just a great rock n roll band with some great lyrics

Bigger bang tour the hold steady were the support act on a few dates so had catering with them for about a month.

Only time I heard of the band was when it came on the iPod.

Took no notice of support except for Amy wine house was supposed to do a support in Switzerland but was to pissed .

Wouldn't have minded seeing her.

My only stage struck was Brian may .

Re: Covers of songs that blew you away?
I fucking love The Hold Steady Boy40.

They played Bush Hall in Shepherds Bush a couple of years ago and as it's a tiny venue I was pulling my hair out trying to get tickets.

I was telling a pal who lives over that way that I was going to miss them and he said 'Bush Hall'? I know the owner really well from my AA meetings. It's literally the only venue I could get you into'.

I was telling the owner how much I love the band and how grateful I was that he'd got me in (free!) as we looked down at them through the glass roof where the backstage area was.

They were really pissing it up and having fun and the owner said 'do you want to meet them? They seem like decent blokes' and I have to say I said no as I hate meeting my heroes. I go all stupid.

Mad really as I used to have a job taking sportsmen, actors and popstars around on the back of a motorbike. I took people like David Beckham, Bruce Willis, Claudio Ranieri and all sorts with no problem whatsoever and the only time I ever got star-struck was when I had to take Tony Gale from Watford to Chelsea!

I'm a full-grown man for fuck sake but I had exactly the same feeling I had as a nine-year-old when I sat down on a District line train, looked up and saw I was sitting across from my idol, Alan Devonshire. I went like a fucking soppy tart.
