Our midfield

Plenty to choose from when all are fit, but what is our best combination? With Lanzini, Antonio, Kouyate and probably Carvalho coming in, and even Rice knocking on the door, I think we are on paper very well set up.
Arno, Noble, Fernandes and Ayew was a disaster, escpeasially the latter two.
So how does it look like from now on for you?

He needs to get fit first or actually show an interest, watching him I'm not sure which it is, nowhere near the same player but hopefully he'll get close with more games.

Let's just hope Lanzini and Kouyate comes back very soon, and that Sakho stays fit.

Aye is pointless as a player to rely on, complete luxury player, only uselfull as a poacher in last 20 playing off a big man, offers nothing in mf or out wide but can poach the odd goal.

Agree V.
Ayew does not play like a midfielder or striker. He is neither one or the other and Arnautovic is not famed for his tracking back and covering so we essentially had Noble and Rice having to do most of the work as Antonio was playing his first 90 mins too.
Our one paced, dozy centre backs that were undone for their first goal , a counter attack from a long ball and 2 players , the Italian lad getting in behind with neither Ogbonna and Fonte tracking him. Don't they talk. Perhaps a covering midfielder would have gone with him?
Bilic is naive at best.

Outnumbered in midfield today, as so often under Bilic. You can't really judge the players under those conditions. To me it's a schoolboy error from the coach, especially away from home against a possession side. You must match them for numbers in there or else you'll be defensively weak.

We didn't have a midfield for the whole of last season and to be honest even the one before.

The problem I see is we only have one central / creative / attacking midfielder, Lanzini and he is injured. It complicates the midfield linking up with the forwards particularly Chicharito. From the possible transfer rumours we do not have any possibility of changing this and need either Lanzini fit for the season or a defence orientated midfield pushing up to support the forwards. It will be interesting to see if this can work for us.
All the rest of the midfield we have plenty of good players and cover.

Wenders
You have me worried now, it is the time for a conservative 3x CBs and solid CMF set up, ambition can be shown up top and upon the bench

If Awobi does not play for Arsenal this weekend, we should put a crafty bid in for him, or loan. Bolster up the midfield with an attack minded player. Young, strong, improving and impressed when seen in Community Shield. Arsenal could listen with there abundance of players

I didn't think noble is a holding mid field player. They always seem to be in position when the other teams attack looking up the pitch whereas when teams attack us noble is always running back towards goal behind them

Re: Our midfield

I think the problem is the organisation of the whole midfield and defensive units in general.
They push up as individuals and rely on everyone else to do the chasing back.
Noble's inability to keep pace or match the strength of other midfielders moving towards and around him is an issue. He's not the best tackler, passer and without being from up the road would not have been allowed to play at this club for half as long. In the final year at the boleyn, we saw a real quality in him. He led fantastically and organised the midfield and defence really well.
He should look to Carrick to see how it's done. Carrick marks space and reacts to the space rather than the play.
We also get ripped apart by the full backs going for a wander. They lose the ball 10-15 yards from the opposition box because there's no decent pass on and then give up. They are far too cavalier.
We should admit that we can't play the wing back system and have a unit that tuck in and sit tight against better teams. Their wandering leaves people without pace like Noble exposed and how many times last year did we see him get taken out of the game with two passes and it leading to a goal?
My midfield would be Arnautovic, Obiang, Kouyate, Lanzini, Antonio. Obiang to come out if we get Carvalho.

You all seem to think that Bilic is going to drop Noble. Can't see it myself. I think it's more likely he'll be shoehorned in, in place of a better player

Carvalho. Everything will start with him and everything will stop at him (hopefully). I predict he become irreplaceable.

If we compare our midfield 3 ( obiang, noble, Fernandes) with, for the sake of argument, the worst midfield 3 in the premier league swansea's 3 of Britton, fer and Carroll. Even with my c nad b specs, I am not sure our lot are any better Much work to be done
