Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
Firstly, We have to play our first three games away from home! This league is so tight and you can't afford to give an inch, already on the back foot here!

Secondly, drawing Man Utd in our first game! They are going to demolish a lot of teams this year, would Palace, Brighton or Swansea have been a better first game?

Thirdly, our key players not fit for the start of the Season, Lanzini, Antonio, Kouyate and Carroll, how would we of got on at Utd and Southampton with all these players fit?

and lastly, the ref not giving us any breaks at all except the Noble tackle at Saints!

Also, seperate question? Have teams got a mental advantage when they play us? Are we a soft touch that leaks goals? think we all know the answer to that!

Luck? all this had rooted us to the bottom of the league with no points and Bilic being talked about already losing his job! Lose the next three games and he will no doubt!

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
Justin P - I think a bit of both.

There was a time when playing a top team in the first match was thought to be good, they may still be rusty - well that didn't work for us. But a Southampton who couldn't score in our second game was not the answer either.

As for injuries is that really bad luck, or bad management/physio's/training facilities? When did we last have a fully fit squad, or even just one or two out?

As for three away games to start out with, well we weren't particularly strong at home last season were we? At least the two we have played must now visit our place.

Ref was crap on Saturday and yes clubs must look down the fixture list to see when they are playing us, as said on another thread Newcastle couldn't wish for a better fixture this weekend.

Jim I wholeheartedly concur with the lack of our discipline, but it wouldn't have got to that if saints had been punished.

Yes they should control themselves, but sometimes luck does come into it with things like refereeing which is beyond our control. However most of our shit is self inflicted

Robson.
Is it lucky or unlucky?
They don't occur completely in a vacuum do they? They are part of the whole game and the season and history etc. We all know of certain managers who will do everything in their power to influence a ref. Then there's the actions on the bench and then there's the chanting from the crowd.
A bad decision by a ref in any sport is part of a whole set of circumstances, experiences and influences. Maybe they wee just blinking at that moment?
That's why technology is being used so much in crucial decisions now.

So. I would guess on some occasions its just unlucky but I still think there's a lot the management and team can do to mitigate against poor reffing.

Bad refereeing decisions - provided they are not made intentionally for biased/corrupt reasons - are the very essence of luck in this context. They are pivotal moments that are out of everyone's control (other than the ref), like the flip of a coin.

You make a fair point and yes it IS unlucky for us that they got away with things, however that is no excuse for our own lack of discipline. Had we of kept our heads we would have got a least a point, but we didn't.

'Of course it does. If you are under pressure have the ball less (less shots) you will have to make more tackles and challenges. This in turn gives the ref the opportunity to award red cards and yellow, whether warranted or not.'

It's very rare that you read such horseshit.

I'm not going to debate the luck thing, but there is not a single fucking reason why a team should be having 5 of 7 red cards rescinded for anything other than poor refereeing. I mean, just to take 1 example, Feghouli was sent off against Man United for pretty much the first tackle of the match.

It's nothing to do with luck though is it?.whether or not they were bad decisions is a separate issue.

What about saints gettting away with 2 blatant red cards?

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
No such thing as luck.

It's the club's fault we're not at home.

Nothing to do with luck that we played an hour against Southampton with ten men.

The manner of defeat governs whether you leave OT with heads lowered or held high feeding confidence for following games.
If the same players are always injured can't be luck.

Maybe cynical but I don't have confidence we have the best back room medical staff.

If you can "make your own luck" it's not luck, is it? Next.

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
The previous match Lee Mason refereed for us we won a dubious penalty against Hull last season, and managed to grab a much needed 1-0 victory.

Although I do think we are unlucky more times than we are lucky, I also think Mason is a crap referee.

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
Luck is a feeble excuse for the most part. Of course some elements of games do come down to luck - freak injuries and the like. But the constant whinging about referees and injuries and breaks in games is incredibly blinkered imo - it seems to assume all breaks go against us while ignoring those that go with us.

In some ways, luck is what you mitigate against with good decision-making. This club is very bad at that imo.

It all depends on whether the gypsy cursed the whole club or just the Boleyn Ground.

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
Westside, name me one of the 'better' teams with a record like that? Because that has nothing to do with how many shots you have.

Of course it does. If you are under pressure have the ball less (less shots) you will have to make more tackles and challenges. This in turn gives the ref the opportunity to award red cards and yellow, whether warranted or not.

For the 2015/16 season, the most yellow cards were awarded against Aston Villa, who were relegated (in last place). I'm sure some of those were undeserved, but it shows the correlation between being not very good and getting a lot of cards.

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
We were crap against Man Utd but I don't think you could accuse the team of lacking steel at Southampton.

The fucking idiotic Austrian aside we showed a lot of character to come back to 2-2. I feared the worst at 2-0 and we could easily have gone down to another 4-0 or worse.

Re: Are we just unlucky? or do you make your own luck?
That spell of four draws with dodgy decisions galore and three red cards rescinded during the last UP season made me consider the conspiracy theory of the FA wanting only one upset of the applecart team and during last season I've seen enough games where we've been roughed up but once we gave some back we were pulled up almost immediately. Subconsciously I think there's jealousy about us getting a stadium virtually free but also there's an agenda to keep the top teams up there as they account for the vast majority of satellite TV customers and consequently the vast amount of income.it generates.

Ok what about saints getting away with 2 blatant red cards and a penalty?

If either of their read had been given nobody would be talking about noble challenge and Arnie wouldn't have elbowed that fella?

Is that billic's fault? To me THAT is dowb to bad luck

Lets put it this way. If we made our own luck we'd all be Lionel Messi and all be playing for Barcelona.
In fact no player would ever be playing for West Ham on that basis.

5 of our last 7 red cards before this season were recinded. There were some fucking incredible ones against the top teams.
