Lots of reasons you use session players of the quality they did. Different tone, phrasing and deffinitely as a broad promotional thing. Back then, talking about the musicians on records was a big nerdy thing for core fans.

I was listening to FM (No Static At All) the other week and was admiring the lead guitar, knowing that SD used a lot of session musicians I thought I'd see who it was playing, turns out it was Becker himself. Listening to the quality of it I was wondering why he didn't do them all!

Great band, couldn't get tickets for their gig over here next month, but Fagan's voice is not what it was.

There are loads of brilliant musicians and songwriters now. These guys had a great thing and were meticulous about standards. Their movement from hippy pop rock to jazzy pop was amazing.

There was a backlash against musicians who could play their instruments in the punk era ... mainly due to noodling types like Emerson Lake & Palmer and Rick Wakeman who disappeared up their own arses but these guys were seriously talented.

Was reading that when they were in college they played in a band with Chevy Chase on drums.
They went off the rails for a while when Becker got a drug habit but were always quality.

RIP

Half of them can't even read or write music

Hendrix, Clapton, the Beatles, slash and countless others couldn't either, yet Gary Barlow can, it's not a prerequisite to being great.

Fagan and Becker were musical geniuses - songwriters, musicians and performers who created art and broke new ground every time they released an album.

Today's pop artists aren't fit to lace the boots of Becker and Fagan. Half of them can't even read or write music. Talent isn't required any more, just marketing and videos.

I had the great privilege of seeing Fagan and Becker live in Atlanta in 1994. They were mesmerising - one of the best acts I ever saw on stage.

RIP a musical legend.

Gutted. The Dan are my all time favourite band and a week doesn't go by without me listening to one of their albums. Their music still sounds as great today as when I first heard them in '72.
RIP Walter.

On a selfish note, I wonder how that might effect the o2 gig.
