Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
Quite a decent article. I thought we was slow on the counter, but i did not think we were the slowest! Seems like our passing is not much better either..

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
You do wonder if Bilic and the coaching team get these stats? Dont they get this from opta etc..?

"Elsewhere, Everton (1.04 m/s) and struggling West Ham (1.05 m/s) are the slowest at moving the ball forwards. Curiously, the Hammers are averaging a similar number of passes per sequence as Burnley and Crystal Palace - who are among the quickest at progressing forwards."

This Noble, picking up the ball and doing his big circle routine of going knowhere and then back again for ages while the other team have all the time in the world to organize their defence!

The folly is that we used to be a counter attacking team! and we still think we are, hence the buying of pacy wingers and forwards. But that doesnt work if the midfield cant keep and move the ball upfield better.

Which always points me to the Carvalho thing...

On the other hand, looking at southampton game, when we want to do it we can. So why the boss doesnt insist on that play straight away is beyond me.

Judging by the evidence of my own eyes I'd guess last year was almost identical.

I would not read to much into this based on just 3 games.
It will get more interesting as the season progresses

"bad passing accuracy hurts us more"

Bad passing accuracy comes from a lack of options for the man on the ball due to a lack of movement due to a lack of fitness.

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
the long ball business is the combination of a few things:

- defensive tactics. we sit back in numbers and let teams have the ball. when/if we do win the ball back, the person on the ball has very few options.
- fitness. if we find an 'out' ball the players struggle to get up/down to support
- lack of confidence. players are scared to make mistakes and will usually look for a safe pass.
- missing lanzini/antonio. two of the players who help us 'transition' through phases.

'Seems we are still stuck with one foot in the "boot it long to Andy" mindset?'

We're not though, because we don't even do that. He often comes short to try and get hold of the ball, then we're left with no-one in an advanced position to get the ball to.

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
Pace helps a lot, but I'd say our bad passing accuracy hurts us more. Generally our defenders keep most probing attacks out, but when we give possession away cheaply upfield, we turn to keystone cops racing back to defend counter attacks.

As Peter Reid kept saying again and again, in complete desperation, on that documentary when he managed Sunderland......."Keep hold of the ball.........just keep hold of the ball."

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
This is indeed the symptom of a manager who is not demanding enough and coaching / managing as if it were 20 years ago.

The modern game is about pace, fitness and intensity. Bilic and crew's approach is as many say without an identity. BFS mark II except we are no longer organised in defence and people like him as a person. So in fact Bilic is in many ways a step down from BFS. We were told to be careful for what we wished for :-(

I have droned on about the lack of midfield mobility/pace and intensity for a while as have many others.

What on earth is going through Bilic and his staff's heads? Do they think we can casually pass our way through.

Seems we are still stuck with one foot in the "boot it long to Andy" mindset?

He needs to go and dithering is just throwing away more points and putting off the inevitable.

Because it's a definite trend carrying over from last season, where we were largely awful and it suggests nothing at all has changed thus far.

Slow and ponderous with very little creativity.

It is over 3 games in which we have lost and had 10 men for much of one of them

Who gives a shit about these stats.

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
This is all down to tactics, coaching and preparation. (or lack of)

Our sole attacking gameplan last season revolved around one of the following:

-Pass back and forward across midfield with little pentration or movement, hoping for a ridiculous mistake from the opposition

-Giving it to Lanzini and relying on him producing a bit of magic or beating about three players

-Hoping Antonio can outpace their entire defence either running after a deep ball or with the ball himself from the edge of our area.

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
I think this also shows hat we have no plan or strategy when it comes to signings

Klopp likes his teams to press all over the park and siege the opposition so pace is vital - so he signs quick players with stamina and work rate (hence also not rating Sturridge too much)

Bilic has no plan so we sign anyone and just sort of plonk them out there

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
More worrying than the lack of pace is the collective slowness of thought

ornchurch ammer 1:37 Tue Sep 5
Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
Yes we have a plodder or two in the team BUT we are slow as a team because we are not fit enough to keep up any high tempo for any length of time and we are the most direct as, along with the lack of tempo we are easy to close down so resort to going long.

As I said, both down to fitness.

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
im surprised anyone should be surprised by this. We are the easiest side to defend against ( light a cigar, saunter back and eventually the ball will criss-cross in front of our back four and come at you down the channel) and the easiest to score against.. drop a ball behind the non existent midfield and the back four and run at the centre backs- you'll normally have enough time to fall over, wait for your playing partner to turn up and give him a tap in.

Truly awful state of affairs and " working harder" isnt going to change a fucking thing. we are fucked.

I've been surprised that this hasn't been pick up sooner, considering the previous manager was hounded over it.

I'd go as far as to say it's we're as slow and direct as we've ever been.

dealcanvey 12:36 Tue Sep 5
Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
the thing is we do have a few players with a bit of pace. That is why I was shocked to see how slow we really are.

Shows how easy it must be for teams to set up and defend against us.

When we cant defend ourselves, it makes very worrying reading.

Re: Who is the slowest and most direct team in the Premier League?
I'd say it's more to do with the fact our midfielders are fucking slow Ornchurch.

I'm 43 and am quicker than a couple of them.

Obviously I'm fucked after about 3 sprints though!!
