Far East Hammer in Nay Pyi Taw
A small road here is dual-4 lane. Road to parliament is dual-10 lane, with more traffic lanes (i.e. 20) in view than cars. Decidedly strange and makes Canberra seem compact.

And in case you're wondering about the icon. I was asked at a meeting where I was from, when I said England I was asked what my team was. When I replied, the two Burmese in the room with me started discussing "Sir" Bobby Moore (that's how they described him), Joe Cole and "that mad Italian Di Canio"

I wouldn't mind a bit of Burma, but every time I've had a sniff the Norwegian & Singaporean big boys beat me to it. Very iffy.

Can't go now though as I'm tied up till next March, at least, and maybe beyond if the rumours coming out of the sales division have any legs.

Hi Coffee.

I was in Yangon/Rangoon from last Sunday night until last Thursday morning, then again from Friday evening until a few hours ago.

Now on 1st of 3 nights in Mandalay, then a ride down the river to Nyaung-U, one night there/ Bagan. Back to Rangoon Thursday late morning. Then depart late Friday night/ small hours of Saturday to fly back to HKG.

Then I've got Dhaka for I think the 5th time this year at the end of the month

I'll see if i can get an opinion from locals on Thandwe/ Ngapali - it's in Rakhine but he fare west thereof. From a quick googling it looks like a good spot.

I got back into Yangon for the weekend and spent this morning at Shwedagon - well worth a couple of hours. Off to Mandalay this evening. (Without wishing to tempt fate, this work trip so far proving to be one of the better ones!)

Also food options much wider than when I was last here (12 years ago). I suspect it might be an idea to visit Yangon sooner rather than later, as things are changing - I'd like to think that the character of old parts of town will be preserved, but you never know.

Gav - you'll be lucky, the mining industry collapsed there years ago.

Keep up the Myanmar chat, chaps - considering going to Ngapali Beach next year.

Not as bad as the junta was, but certainly bang out of order with regards the Rakhine/ Rohingya - sadly it seems adopting standard, ages old Burmese prejudice against them

Re: Far East Hammer in Nay Pyi Taw
Coffee - there was a large police presence in Yangon yesterday afternoon. The local with me commented on this and said that there were rumours of a revenge action by the Rohingya being a possibility, but no-one was sure whether this was simply a return to government misinformation/ scare tactics or for real.

And about a month or so back, in Bangladesh, discussing future border crossing development it appeared that the Teknaf - Maundaw crossing point's upgrading had very much been put on the backburner

The road to Teknaf seems to have been landmined...
