North Korea fires another missle.
War looms ever closer.

Have to feel sorry for their civilian population, they are ones that are suffering and will lose their lives in this.

I understand their passion to murder us completely. That is not in dispute.

It's their ability to use nuclear weapons that I dont think is possible. Simply because of the complexity of it all.

It doesn't need "a nation" to act as one to set things off - just as it wasn't "every Muslim" who flew the planes into the Twin Towers.

All it requires is enough determined, like-minded people to gain access and authority.

These people generally don't hold referendums on what to do and when; if they feel launching atomic weapons furthers their cause, they'll do so if they can.

That YOU cannot unduerstand THEIR depth of passion for that cause does not make it less real.

The big problem with the people of the west is that they simply cannot get their heads around the fact that many people have a very different ideology to them and these people are as convinced THEY are right as are the "westerners".

Their "solution" is to simply (but disrespectfully) condescendingly label them as uneducated, unenlightened or uncivilised - as if that somehow helps to even begin to address the problem.

Like I said, if your foe doesn't give a fuck about living, all the "civilised" MAD defence arguments fall at the first hurdle.

No nation is going to decide not to give a fuck. They are nations. They exist to survive. That's why despite many disagreements no nuclear nation has ever used it since Hiroshima. It is probably the best detterent we have ever had for war.

Only terrorist don't give a fuck, and they are not organised enough to deal with nuclear weapons. It's too technical for basic terrorism. N. Korea is the nearest anyone can think of to a terrorist nation but the reality is they are far from that. They do things openley, they have a standing army with uniforms. They do not sponsor terrorism abroad. The USA under bush jr tried to market n.korea as part of a terrorist axis of evil. But that isn't really true.

You are approaching the problem with the arrogance of a blinkered western mindset.

If two opposing nations have nuclear weapons and one decides they don't give a fuck if they get obliterated through a mutual response to first use, then they cease to be a deterrent and will be used to further their aim.

All those virgins are awfully tempting. And taking out the enemy at the same time? What's not to like?

India and Pakistan have multiple stand offs that havent led to anything like the devastation we have seen in Iraq, Syria or Afghanistan. Precisely because they have nukes and it can't ever get to that level. That's the point.

The USA would have bases in north Korea if it weren't for the Chinese (and Russians) pushing them back. Part of the whole North Korean problem is that china doesn't want another USA base on its doorstep. Same reason why Russia didn't want Ukraine in NATO. American bases are fucking everywhere.

If you think America would wipe out n.korean defences and not move with s.korean army to take over that region you need your head examined. It's been an ambition for decades.

My nuclear theory may sound a but strange but you're not thinking it through. Nuclear weapons are "deterrents" not primarily assertive weapons.

The goal is to deter someone from doing something crazy to you. If you have them no one can do anything crazy unless they risk losing everything. So prior to nuclear weapons we had two of the bloodiest conflicts known to man, and after the super powers have had these weapons we just get proxy wars and not these huge world conflicts.

The more countries have them the more deterrents. If China and n.korea didn't have nuclear capability s.korea would have invaded ages ago with american help. Therefore lives have been saved not lost.

The idea that terrorists will get hold of nuclear codes or carry a dirty bomb is just far fetched. These are complicated bits of equipment that can't just be set off willy nilly. Look how much testing the damn things take to get them working! And how much it costs to maintain and keep the things operational. Trident cost how much just keep running?

Anyway. It's always good to question conventional wisdom. It's what we are meant to do.

-Comparing India to North Korea. On any level.
-Totally ignoring the multiple stand offs between India and Pakistan.
-Totally ignoring North Korea's record on pretty much everything
-Lamenting that the Taliban didn't have access to nukes
-Theorizing that Trump has some sort of end goal of invading North Korea

Some people are insane.

Having the power that nuclear weapons bring also requires responsibility and stability. The west (& Russia/USSR) and China have had centuries of relative stability and the accompanying responsibility. They understand the destructive power and many, many safeguards are in place to prevent their (mis-) use, even with wild (by western standards) political swings of the controlling authority.

India and Pakistan, however, are totally different scenarios.

It only needs someone with the mindset of a suicide bomber to gain access to the weapons, with the authority/ability to launch them and they will have no hesitation in using them.

THEY don't care if they get vaporised in the process - THEY have 72 virgins waiting in eternity for them. Sorted. Their fellow countrymen should, in their minds, be equally grateful to be sent on that same journey, whether or not it was their wish.

Now imagine that capability in the hands of the nations you listed. Nations that are, by all civilised standards still at the multi-tribal stage of development, with each tribe willing to do ll it can to gain/hold onto power. Anything.

An atom bomb, in their mind, is just a sharper sword.

Re: North Korea fires another missle.
Has it been bad that India has nuclear capabilities?
I would argue that if two sides have nuclear weapons the chances of war between them are far less. It could be said that nuclear proliferation has saved far more lives than if we didn't have it.

The reality is the USA don't want n.korea to have the bomb because they won't be able to attack them if they do. It's got nothing to do with safety and more to do with being able to dictate and control other countries. The USA would flatten n.korea tomorrow if it were sure that Japan and s. Korea wouldn't be destroyed in the process. They can't even be sure that n.korea couldn't get a missile to hit New York! So they're stuck. A military attack on n.korea would be the biggest gamble the US military have ever made. Every one knows it. But Trump keeps talking himself into making a gamble that could cost millions of lives.

If any missile defence system worked 100% the US would have attacked n.korea by now. All China would do is stop the US physically taking over n.korea but it wouldn't attack the USA being that most of Chinese debt is in the US. No one is really stopping the USA having a go at the n.korea accept that the US know they can't do it withou mass casualties for their allies. I'm wondering whether this charade will stop and everyone start talking again.

One thing I'm do know is that if Afghanistan,Iraq, syria, Libya etc.. had nuclear weapons the countries would still be functional and there would be millions still alive as there would have been no wars. And we wouldn't have ISIS and we wouldn't have the level of terrorism we have now. Makes you think...

Re: North Korea fires another missle.
I recently did a script doctoring on a movie based on the life of Abdul kalam, who engineered India's nuclear capabilities despite the threat of the Clinton led US government. The threat was ignored and India became a nuclear armed nation.

It's history repeating itself, this time under Trump. It's all postulating and rhetoric by the US but when it comes down to it they haven't got a clue how to handle the situation. Very reminiscent of those fights you got in to at school where you'd shout "hold me back, hold me back", rather than punch the fucker.

So anything that North Korea does, Trump is responsible for.

Listen to yourself.

What is it with lefties and the concept of personal accountability? Everything always has to be someone else's fault.

See what I did there...

Trump didn't cause the issue, but it's now his responsibility how to handle it. That is the job of a leader. And he will be blamed if people get nuked and lose lives. That's why he gets the big bucks...

Lee Trundle

"Were all those missile tests during Obama's era the fault of Trump as well? You know, the ones in 2013 that lead to a crisis on the Korean peninsula that almost created a war?"

I just don't remember shooting two missile over Japan in a few weeks of each other. I think Trump's rhetoric is to blame for that one.

He is basically saying that he is going to do something if they dont stop provoking the US. So they keep provoking the US waiting to see what Trump will do.

It's a big game of chicken right now and the N.Koreans have started explicitly pointing at Japan. No just saying it, but actually firing missiles at the country.

Now S.Korea is one thing, but Tokyo? Different gravy altogether. N.Korea isnt really anything to do with Japan but is being used as a hostage simply because the USA has sworn to protect it.

Now the countries in the pacific that are meant to be under American protection (Japan, Taiwan, S.Korea etc..) will be asking whether that is really the case? Even European countries under NATO/US protection will be asking the same thing.

Or is it only that the US can provide a retaliation after the a few missiles have already landed and destroyed their countries?

So Trump is being asked "show me the money" by N.Korea. And he wouldn't have if he didnt keep his mouth shut giving it the bigun all the time.

But thats the way he does things, and so many of you love that "big talk" shit, well this is what happens when you talk and dont back it up. you look stupid, toothless and people dont believe you anymore.

Trump knows this and wont have it. Because he is a narcissist at heart and it doesnt sit with him.So I feel "something" has to happen. And it's probably going to be the USA. And its scary. I've never been worried about it before but I think I'm going put off my Japan trip... and I'm a pretty rational person normally. So I cant even believe I'm thinking like this. But hey... In Trump world anything can happen..

Re: North Korea fires another missle.
Is this North Korean twat just flexing or is he mad enough to actually fire at Japan/South Korea with the intention of harm? If he is what can be done? Well, not a lot without massive loss of life thatis for sure.

The N Korean border is lined with missile launchers primed ready to be launched, whilst S Korea with the help of the US could shoot down and intercept a large amount of these missiles some would get through and land in Seoul.

So, if this N Korean nutjob actually feels like it and the US get trigger happy expect a shit fest in terms of lost lives and destruction
