The Netherlands Football Team
As a nation we constantly bemoan our National football team for constant under achievements. But what on earth is happening with the Dutch? I have long been an admirer of the style of play with which Holland played and the players they produced. From the Cruyff's and Neeskens of the 70's, the Gullit's and Van Bazstens of the 80's, and others beyond. I don't think any nation with such a history of churning out quality players has suffered as much as they have in the modern era. With only three main sides in there premier division will we ever see the likes of those again playing for the Oranje. I personally hope so as a top Dutch team was always a joy to watch. More so than our lot.

Crassus, she was no tart mate. She was the love of my life who died a week after I came out of the Royal Air Force. Have some respect son.

'But what on earth is happening with the Dutch?'

I have told you exactly what, based upon reading and listening to Dutch correspondents over recent years but you press on mate, obviously know better having been hanging out of the back of a Dutch tart whilst quaffing Edam but insufficiently knowledgable to prevent asking the question or accepting a perfectly obvious answer on here

So Mr Font of all things tulip - who exactly are their current top players then, you know, the ones fit to lace their predecessors boots?

'I don’t want to generalise but Dutchmen can be stubborn buggers.'

That's not a generalisation, that's a fact. But then, what would you expect from a people who reclaimed about half their country back from the North fucking Sea.

Crassus, you are talking shite. Trust me I have probably way more knowledge than you when it comes to Dutch football. For one I have actually lived in the country, two I had a relationship with a very passionate Dutch girl for three years. Three the original post was about the demise of the Country's football. You have an opinion, but I don't buy it to be honest.

I have told you what the problerm is, again, nothing to do with producing talent, merely it's development overseas

And this so called glittering aray of stars in their side - load of bollox, they have been playing an aged RVP, Babel and Depay, there best players by far, are the 55 year old Robben and the Southampton rebel Virgil

Their squad is shite, their pool worse - they are fucked and will remain so

I don’t want to generalise but Dutchmen can be stubborn buggers.
And every Dutch footballer had an opinion as to how they should be playing.
Can remember from Euro 96 onwards that the cliques often had a split based on colour.
In Cruyff’s day it was about him knowing how everyone should play and telling them. In a forceful manner

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
Sven, the Dutch were renowned for having pre tournament bust ups but when things got going they seemed to pull together. The squad that won the Euro's in 88 were a real candidate to win the following World Cup. Never happened. Shames me to say it but I would love a good Dutch side win the World Cup rather than England.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
What is vital is that when an international team turns up with a nucleas of really good players it also happens to have a top coach to employ them effectively.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
Belgium are just having a little golden period at the moment with players like DeBruyne, Hazard, Lukaku, Courtois etc
Not sure where THAT has come from at the same time that Netherlands have dried up.
Belgium have flattered to deceive a bit so far and 2018 is when they really need to step up.

Not sure what has happened to Netherlands production line of talent through the youth system of Ajax but they have often also seemed to suffer from cliques in the dressing room.
Even the great Dutch teams had stubborn argumentative players but they seemed to come together when it mattered.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
Belgium have a similar population to Holland. So that kind of stifles the population argument. What I don't understand is, what has happened to the production line in Holland! Is it to do with younger players going to Spain or Italy and ultimately not fulfilling there potential?

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
Fact is that, and it is glaringly obvious, the Dutch do not have the players of yesteryear. They do not have, either, a couple of outstanding players who can carry a team.

Compare and contrast the Belgians who have a great selection of players and despite having Martinez as manager look like potential WC semi finalists.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
In fairness to holland, they got the shorter stew with the qualifying group this time around. Since expanding the tournamentbs, the days of having two really big teams in a qualifying group seem to be long gone so to be up against France (whose squad is quite astonishing) and a slowly resurgent Sweden is unlucky - compare that to our group or wales'. The only other one like it is the one with Italy and Spain.

Regardless though they should have had enough to make it through, and personally I think it's a real shame for players of the quality they've got to not be there.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
Correct answer Ronald and who is missing from that group of nations? Us. The German's were so embarrassed and humiliated by that result that they took drastic measures to improve and get back to where they wanted to be. The end result being that they became the first European country to win the World Cup in South America.
What have England achieved since that night? A big fat Fuck All.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
They lost on pens to Argentina in the last WC Semi final and then beat Brazil 3-0 in the 3rd place match.
In 2010 they made the final and tried to kick the great Spain out of it.

They don’t have the players of the Cruyff, Gullit / Van Basten or the Bergkamp eras and other countries seem to have caught up tactically.
You could argue that Cruyff took the total football to Barcelona in the early 90’s and Spain became the new Netherlands.

Anyone interested in the mentality of Dutch football should read Brilliant Orange : The Neurotic Genius of Dutch football by David Winner. It was published around 2000 but understand it was updated after the 2010 World Cup.

Re: The Netherlands Football Team
Let's not be over hasty they got to the SF in the last world cup (I think) They still have plenty of good players and will always have good players, Arjen Robben is one of the best players I've seen in the last 10 years, way way better than anything we've had. RVP too.

Must be a management thing or an unhappy camp as it doesn't make much sense.
