West Ham United sign Jack Wilshere

West Ham United are delighted to confirm the signing of Jack Wilshere on a three-year contract.

The 26-year-old midfielder arrives at London Stadium and joins the Club he supported as a boy after he chose to leave Arsenal after 17 years when his contract expired last month.

The 34-cap England international put pen-to-paper with the Hammers on Monday and will fly out to Switzerland to link up with Manuel Pellegrini’s squad at their pre-season training camp in Bad Ragaz.

“It feels good, it feels special,” said Wilshere, whose father and brother are also lifelong Hammers. “Many people know that I’ve had a special bond with this Club growing up.

“People will have seen the picture of me in a West Ham shirt and I’ve got good memories of my childhood supporting West Ham, watching them at Upton Park. It feels good and of course my family and a few of my friends are West Ham fans so everyone’s buzzing.”

Wilshere said he did not have to think twice when he learned of West Ham’s interest in securing his services, with Pellegrini’s ambitious plans, the passion of the Claret and Blue Army and London Stadium all convincing him his future lie in east London.

“I think it was a number of things,” he confirmed, “the manager being one and the way he wants to play and where he sees me playing.

“The fans, of course – everyone knows how big West Ham’s fanbase is – and especially in this new Stadium. Not many clubs could fill it week in, week out, and West Ham do.

“I want to be playing here in front of the Hammers, and my bond I’ve had with the Club over my childhood will make it even more special.”

Director of Football Mario Husillos said Wilshere’s qualities made him a natural target for the Hammers.

“Manuel and I identified him as a target as soon as we joined the Club and we are delighted to have succeeded in securing Jack’s signature above a number of other teams.

“Jack is a player with vast experience and quality at the highest level, having played all of his career in the Premier League.

“On the biggest stage, he has shown that he has game-changing abilities, as well as having the creativity and intelligence to make a real difference to our squad.

“He is a passionate man and has shown winning characteristics throughout his career. Jack will be a great addition and we look forward to seeing his undoubted quality in a West Ham United shirt over the coming years as we fight for important goals at the Club.”

Born in Hertfordshire, Wilshere grew up in a West Ham-supporting family, idolising the likes of John Moncur, Paolo Di Canio and Joe Cole.

Wilshere joined Arsenal at the age of nine and rose through the ranks to make his first team debut in a Premier League match at Blackburn Rovers in September 2008 – when he was just 16.

After a successful loan spell with Bolton Wanderers, he returned to Emirates Stadium and became a Premier League regular while still a teenager.

A two-time FA Cup winner, Wilshere played 27 times in the UEFA Champions League for the Gunners, announcing himself with an outstanding display in a Round of 16 victory over Barcelona in February 2011.

The last two seasons have brought plenty of first-team action for the midfielder, with 27 appearances during a loan spell at AFC Bournemouth in 2016/17 being followed by 38 outings in all competitions for the Gunners last term, including 13 in their run to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.

Internationally, he featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016 with England, scoring twice in his 34 appearances for the Three Lions.

West Ham United would like to welcome Jack and his family to the Club and wish him every success in his career in Claret and Blue.

Re: Jack Wilshere
It is a shame he is so prone to injury because of the way he plays as he did look good on Saturday along with Lanzini, thel ess said about the defence the better. But, unfortunately, we know that if he plays 3 games in a row it's a bonus as he will miss the next 10. Shame because he is a really good player.

To use a terrible phrase from the NBA we need to be concerned with his "load management" (yes apparently the yanks dont get why that's funny)

Id expect noble coming on for Wilshere at some point in the last 20 minutes in almost every fixture that he starts if the situation allows it.

We should have the Jack Wheelchair sweepstake. I think he'll pick up his first injury layoff in our second game, Brighton away I believe.

It's one thing looking good in friendlies, he has to do It in the fast pace of the premier league games , last season he looked off the pace for whatever reason. Let's hope he's got back to his peak fitness.

Getting fed up with all the doom and gloom on here about Wilshere's chances of staying fit. Yes he'll probably pick up an injury at some stage but the fact is that he is currently fit and looking seriously good so try looking on the bright side you professional miserable buggers.

Devonshire got a few England caps as well but I don't suppose all three ever played at the same time.

Re: Jack Wilshere Signed
Devonshire played with Alvin in 83, only time they played together I think

think Brooking's last cap was 82?

The closest we've got since the triumvirate would have been Brooking and Alvin Martin in the 80s though not sure how many times they played together.... If at all anyone know?

I don't remember him impressing me last pre-season but I don't remember specifics (maybe... maybe not looking as fit ?) I think he has more passer/smart runner around him this year.

He looked slow and all at sea in a lot of the regular season games but so did everyone in the games he mostly played in.

Manuel, it's just a year ago it of course I remember.

I'll also remember this year next year hardly a fucking super power is it?

Spot on.

The rigours of fully fledged Premier league games will sadly prove too much for him

I fully expect him to be injured again in September.

Methinks people are getting a little carried away. He's played a couple of decent friendlies. He's nowhere near the England squad (and I wouldn't want him to be, either) and is likely a month away from his persistent ankle / knee / bones troubles. His injuries record is pretty appalling.

Alfs 4.29, it might have happened once or twice since but it is fifty years or so since we had more than one regular English international playing for us too.

Back to the days of Moore, Hurst and Peters.

Let's not give ourselves false hope. We'll be lucky if he plays more than ten games this season. He cannot be relied upon to fix our midfield woes.

You actually remember how someone played a year ago for a few games, or do you keep a little red book?

Let's hope he stays fit as clearly is our best player when he is.

Re: Jack Wilshere Signed
He's looked very good, much better than he did last pre-season and he was anonymous in our opening games last season.

Re: Jack Wilshere Signed
Sadly I suspect the people who are saying to play him now so we can get some use out of him before he gets injured are probably correct.

Re: Jack Wilshere Signed
He’s done this his whole career. Had spells where he’s looked genuinely world class, but then always ends up picking up an injury that rules him out for 3 months. He’ll get injured again, that’s for sure. We all just hope that we pick up as many points as possible when he’s playing like this, because we’ll miss him when he’s out.
